It seems TigerDirect is being featured in Forum advertising.

I'd like to know your personal experiences - if any - with this company. Please keep it civil and no flames or this will get locked.

It seems there are "issues" with this company being discussed in Forum Issues and I'd like to see a larger opinion body.

TigerDirect claims there are AT "power users" that get awesome service from them and I'd like to see your comments.

I was a "power user" I guess. I used to order exclusively from the Tiger Catalog @ global in Naperville, IL. I ordered about as much through Tiger as PAB does through Dell.

I saw the huge fiasco on the phone cards, and decided not to shop there any more in support of my fellow AT'ers.

That lasted about 6 months, until I gave them another change and bought 30 something mainboards from them. One was DOA. They refused to take it back, saying that it was not broken when it left the store, so I must hav broken it
rolleye.gif

So they lost my buisness over $100.

That was a while ago, and have not shopped there since. After the post I made in Forum issues, I got both a PM and a phone call in an attempt to get my buisness back. I guess they only want to make it right for the high buck spenders and screw everyone else. Well, too late.

minendo: Contract expired last night.

 Thanks for starting this thread apoppin!

I'm very curious to hear what the ATOT regulars have to say; this should be entertaining :)

Their "free" after MIR sale expired last night and they need to be changed, anyway. However they are still on the public forum banners proudly endorsed by AT.

That is by the ad agency that AT uses, not by AT though right?

Thanks . . . there are some things that the Tiger 'Bot said that bother me. He believes the "bad press" and negative comments by the Better Business Bureau is a "campaign" by some disgruntled customers who want nothing more than to defraud TD.

I'd like to see if this is true or not.

If we keep this civil and factual this thread should continue as in similar threads about other retailers. OT just gets the biggest audience and it IS "off-topic".

No, I believe it is more like by AnandTech Deals. A contract between AT and TD . . . or so I am lead to believe by Anand's comments, the AT Deal Scavenger and the mods (check out their comments in the first page or two in the FI thread I linked to).

Sounds like he is trying to place the blame elsewhere, rather than take responsibility for his company's actions.

That promotion should have said:

"$30! After discount after backorder after late shipping after disqualified mail-in rebate." :frown:

ResellerRating already has a pitifully low score for TigerDirect. So does At's own reseller ratings. The Better Business Bureau warns against doing business with them. And Bizrate basically says 1-in-6 customers has a problem with them.

Tiger claims it is a "campaign" to besmirch their name.

Is it?

It looks to me like an AT deal (especially by the way AT is "handling" the issue) but I'd be glad to be wrong.

Because TG has sent out "backordered" notices to some people who took advantage of the Free After Rebate flashmem promo, I sent this to Bruce of TG per his contact info he posted in the "Forum Issues" thread. I'll update if I get a response.

Bruce,

I saw your contact information on Anandtech and have a question for you. Regarding those of us who took advantage of the "Free after Rebate" flash memory promotion yesterday, but are receiving "backordered" statuses, how do you suggest that we handle it? Is it up to each individual to 'take the risk' of whether they get it in time to meet the rebate redemption requirements, or will these rebates be guaranteed even if they are late, or should concerned customers be better off cancelling the order? Please advise.

Thanks,

That's the problem - second hand reports - part of which Tiger is claiming is a deliberate campaign to hurt their "image".

Only one "power user" has replied.

Anyway, I'm off to work (I missed good large surf the last couple of days due to an ear infection - now that I am better, the swell is gone {so is the swelling, so I should be grateful}). Aloha for now.

Here's his response, which came promptly:

thanks for your email.

Tiger had an overwhelming response to the promotion. We shipped all we had
in stock, & the vendor is shipping us enough to cover all of the orders as
fast as he can.
We will most likely receive early next week & ship out the same day.

All orders will be shipped & all rebates will be honored. Please do not
cancel.

I hope this answers your concerns & if not - feel free to call or email me
with anything else.

Regards,

Bruce

From the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida, and they are reposted on BBB pages from Chicago and North Carolina. (Thx to mrhans for the link.)
Customer Experience

Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record. Specifically our files show a pattern of complaints alleging dissatisfaction with product quality and performance, failure to deliver promised goods or services, failure to eliminate basic cause of complaints, misrepresentation in advertising and marketing practices and a pattern of no response to customer complaints brought to their attention by the Better Business Bureau.

GOVERNMENT ACTION: On November 4, 1999, case# C-3903, the Federal Trade Commission issued a Decision & Order against Tiger Direct for violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act. Without admitting to any wrongdoing, Tiger Direct agrees to 1) not represent that it provides on-site service unless all limitations and conditions that apply are disclosed 2)fulfill its obligations under the warranty within a reasonable period of time after receiving notice from the consumer and 3)shall cease and desist from failing to make warranty text available for examination prior to sale, failing to disclose what is not covered under any given warranty or the procedures needed to have warranty work accomplished and failing to disclose that certain states may give the consumer legal rights in addition to those provided by the warranty. For further information regarding this order, you may contact the FTC at 877-382-4357.
Looks like the FTC is part of the grand conspiracy, too.

I'd assume that AT has a staff of dedicated sales people who end up handling all of this...the banners and text in the posts most certainly comes from Tiger though.

The misunderstanding here that keeps bothering me is that AT is not Sponsoring TigerDirect...it's the other way around. Tiger pays AT money for the ad space that in turn helps pay the sales staff, editors and keep the site functioning...I wouldn't take banners on a site to be a measure of the site's advocacy for a certain vendor...Same way I don't take the car commercials on a TV show to be their endorsement of GM...ya know?

What's unfortunate is that it looks like the sales group actually wasn't aware of the negative perceptions of Tiger before inking a contract. Looks like they should do their homework better next time. It's too bad that a company that appears to be this legit and established apparently has such shady biz practices in the past.

Seems like the sales staff focused on the bizrate and pricegrabber ratings more than resellerratings, BBB reports or the AT user ratings. *note for the future*

</my somewhat uneducated opinion>

Personally, I've order on three separate occasions without incident: a K6-2 cpu, some bulk CDRs, and a 16x CDROM drive. Granted, I read about that phone card fiasco months back so I used a one-time use credit card on the CPU, but nothing came up that I'm aware of from the other two. Cover yourself, not just with Tiger Direct but anytime you place an online order.

As for the "campaign": there are obviously some *very* touchy people on Tiger Direct and among other retailers, both in the forums and in the retailer ratings. There are some serious nutjobs who'll take every chance to mention and remention their backordered / cancelled / delayed item whenver the retailer's name is mentioned. EVERY time... it never fails. I think you know the people I'm talking about. That's not to say that there aren't legitimate complaints (like the phone card offer), but damn, some people will throw in a cheap shot any and every way! :|

Well I think the point is that yes there ARE people that will bitch and moan about anything and everything. These hit every retailer. The problem is the fact that TigerDirect has TONS of terrible reviews. Just take a look and compare to places like NewEgg and MWave. You will see the difference. TD seems to be terrible at customer service and support by all accounts.

Well just to let you all know, tiger screwed me royally. I bought a case and motherboard combo, when they both arrived, I quickly realized the case came without ANY hardware to mount the motherboard. On top of that, their were no drive cables with the mb. Not a big deal i thought...........

So I call them up, after spending over an hour holding on the phone, I proceed to begin battling with customer service and managers who acted as if It was not their problem, I was told repeatedly that their cases don?t come with standoffs, screws, and drive rails (which was a complete f-ing lie) finally a manager got on the phone and said he would send the stuff out next day air. Two or three days go by, no rails, by this time I had already gone out and bought all the hardware and standoffs I needed but since the case was a no name generic and used a special type of drive rail I was desperate to get them.

So, I call them back, this time no-one will take the call, I sit on hold every time I explain my situation to a person, finally after getting hung up on twice (over around a 1.5 hour period) I decide to try calling their sales line. OF COURSE, someone answers after only a few rings, I tell the person I need to speak to whoever is in charge at the moment, they put me on hold for close to 30 minutes, finally this combative a-hole picks up the phone, I try to convey my problem as nicely as I could but the guy didn?t give a f&ck. After a couple minutes of him telling me that I was going to have to pay for them to ship the rails, he says, Ill send them out tomorrow, NO charge. Well that was around 2 years ago, still no rails.

I am not the type of person who complains about service a lot. I have since bought a ton of stuff from other vendors and have never dealt with any vendor NEARLY as bad. As a matter of fact, I don?t think other than a few RMA's, which all went pleasantly I have never had another problem. Then again I always check RR before buying from a new vendor.

Tiger Direct IS the Worst retailer on the net. Their customer service is bottom of the barrel, If you want to risk buying from them go ahead, but be forewarned, if you have any problem with the product, rebate or anything else, dont expect for them to give dam, because BELIEVE ME they won't.

PS, don?t take this rant as me being bitter about a few cheap drive rails, It was all about the way I was treated, I was so pissed off after sitting on hold for over and hour to be hung up on, I about threw the phone through the wall. I gave them every opportunity to resolve or even acknowledge my problem, but all they wanted to do was pass the buc.
