nice.. 200K.. a realistic amount to dream about...

I'd pay all my college debt and credit card bills ("only" couple thousand though)
humbly buy a fully equipped Nissan Altima
Buy some clothes ($200~)
Go on one quick get-away (carribeans)

Invest the rest of 170K~

years later, spend it smart.

If I just won 200k or something, I'd pay my school off, buy my parents a new car, and invest the rest of it. I would probably use the intrest + whatever to pay for my bros college when the time comes around. By the time retirement rolls around it would be worth a shitload.

Pay bills and buy an old laptop (something just fast enough to run a word proggie) so I can write my stories outside if I want to.

I would just go back home and farm till it was all gone (old farmer's joke)....

Actually, it wouldn't be enough for me to quit my real job in the big city, so I'd probably buy a small house (have you ever tried to have a lan party in a one room apartment?), a radeon 9700 pro, pay off my Jeep, and invest the rest.

I would invest 100K of it right off the bat. Use the other 100K to pay off the mortgage, car loan, student loans, and any other debts. That should leave us (wife, son and I) with enough leftover to have a nice meal or two at a fancy restaurant and maybe a movie. :)

I think I would buy a decent car and put the rest away...of course, a good amount would go to my parents.

Pay off loans and give a small gift to very close relatives. Then plant some in savings and used the rest for an eventual down payment on a house.

Oh did I also fail to mention buying a brand new audi A4 with cash :)

i'd buy 4 houses. (Downpayemnts)
Actually, it may not be such a great time to buy up so much real estate. In my area, prices are at an all-time high. The market could sink a little. However, if you were to keep the properties for an extended period of time, it would be a good investment.

Personally, if I had $200K, I'd pay off my mortgage and put $70K away into investments. By not having the mortgage, I would limit my work-week to 3.5 days and have a 3.5 day weekend to do other fun stuff along with some volunteer work.

On another note, I received a termination from my employer of 16 years today. Between my 2 401K plans and my severance money, I have about $140K in pre-tax dollars. Also, I'll still get a pension from this company when I fully retire in about 23 years.

You're right, of course, Amused. You want to die fully invested for the good of the country having never spent a nickel. And you think economics is my weak suite. You is funny.

Moonie, as long as you are invested, you have a source of income, not to mention you create jobs and spur growth. Blow the money, and you have a bunch of depreciated crap and a hell of a lot of regret.

Investing is spending, but with a return.

And you don't have to die with your investments. You can spend it in retirement, or give it away to charity upon your death. Blowing $200,000 now in your teens or twenties means you've blown over a million in retirement money. It's stupid.
