I don't think there is any chart for that... cus steam and other digital distributors do not release their sales figures.

Yeah, digital distributors don't release sales figures and the publishers themselves are usually mum.

If I had to take a guess I'd say Shogun 2, The Witcher 2, and Portal 2.

I'd bet good money that whatever the latest incarnation of the sims is, sold the most by a mile

Don't forget Plants Vs. Zombies. I think everyone that has a computer, phone, XBox, or PS3 now has a copy of that game.

"Steam alone had an estimated revenue of $970 million USD in 2010. Its biggest-selling game for the year was Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops for $98.2 million followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for $39.4 million. Its third largest selling game for the year was Valve's own Left 4 Dead 2 which raked in an impressive $36 million. Steam even took in an estimated $213 million in December alone, probably due to its crazy year-end holiday sale.

"Steam's growth has been remarkable during the year," said FADE director of research and analysis Benjamin Schlichter. "Over 180 titles were estimated reaching over $1 million USD in revenue for the year, painting a very healthy market for developers and publishers, with more room for growth in the future."

Here's the top selling titles on Steam for 2010:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision) - $98.2 Million USD
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision) - $39.4 Million USD
  3. Left 4 Dead 2 (Valve) - $36.0 Million USD
  4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts) - $25.4 Million USD
  5. Sid Meier's Civilization V (2K Games) - $21.9 Million USD
  6. Portal (Valve) - $20.0 Million USD
  7. Fallout: New Vegas (Bethesda Softworks) - $17.0 Million USD
  8. Metro 2033 (THQ) - $13.4 Million USD
  9. Mafia II (2K Games) - $11.9 Million USD
  10. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising (THQ) - $10.8 Million USD"

I believe Portal 2 is #1 for 2011 so far

2011:

"So far Steam has generated an estimated $468 million in first half revenues through June 2011 according to FADE.

Here are the Top 10 Best-Selling Steam Games of 2011 so far:

1. Portal 2 (Valve) – 1,128,000 Units Sold ($56.4 Million USD)
2. Magicka (Paradox Interactive) – 789,000 Units Sold ($6.2 Million USD)
3. Terraria (Re-Logic) – 580,000 Units Sold ($5.8 Million USD)
4. Counter-Strike (Valve) – 399,000 Units Sold ($2.7 Million USD)
5. Total War: Shogun 2 (SEGA) – 326,000 Units Sold ($15.1 Million USD)
6. Monday Night Combat (Uber Entertainment) – 264,000 Units Sold ($2.9 Million USD)
7. Brink (Bethesda Softworks) – 256,000 Units Sold ($13.5 Million USD)
8. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts) – 250,000 Units Sold ($4.2 Million USD)
9. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution (THQ) – 224,000 Units Sold ($13.0 Million USD)
10. Borderlands (2K Games) – 204,000 Units Sold ($1.6 Million USD)

As you can see, Portal 2 definitely lived up to the hype in sales on Steam in particular, as the game leads the pack in revenue and growth on Steam for the first half of the year, selling over 1.1 million units for the service and Steamworks. It earned $56 million USD in revenue for Steam."

For 2010, I'd assume it would be Starcraft 2 and a wow expansion for top 2 spots.

Huh. I guess Shogun wasn't as much of a success as I thought. Also I'm a little disappointed that Mass Effect 2 is nowhere to be found on the 2010 chart.

I love comparing the 2011 chart to the 2010 chart. Good to see games like Terraria and Magika on that list, especially in spots held by CoD games.

Wow, that's not a lot of money, I thought the video game industry was bigger then the movies?

Is it all consoles? or maybe it's these online games, people buy just one game and play it for hundreds of hours. I know I played Bad Company for like 500 hours

Huh? This is just for games purchased through Steam.

I would guess that Steam probably has about 50% of the PC game sales today. But compared to overall industry sales? It's a pittance. Consoles are somewhere around 4-5 billion I think.

Ah, that makes sense. I wasn't thinking because it's been years since I got a game from a store.

PC gaming is huge, especially when you include casual games, social network games, and MMOGs.

What I meant was Steam sales vs. overall industry sales. It's very sad to see MMOs at 2.7 billion lol. It's probably why it took over ten years to make a sequel to one of the most successful games in PC history (Diablo 3).

Farmville on facebook!

No seriously everyone who is on facebook it seems has a farmville account.

My gf has put more time into her rank 62 account on that game then i did with BC2 at rank 41...people end up buying those $10 and $20 farmville cards like crazy....

Can't say what games been hot last year but for 2011 its prob gonna end up being BF3.

I'm sure BF3 would be more popular if stores like Best Buy would replace at least 5 of their 20 MW3 posters with BF3 i'm sure Dice and Ea have fund's for advertising.
