Antibiotics: ginger helps stomach aches when applied to my stomach... so ginger is an invention?
 
For modern society, electricity and the transistor are really high up there. I would also say vaccines, antibiotics and antiviral stuff are also important.
 
The laser is important.
The modern day internet would not be possible without it.
Think of all the things you use every single day that have this technological marvel in them!
