What are some things you splurge on that others may gawk at?

My Canon DSLR 300D, but it is 5 years old now, and nearly obsolete.

I can't think of anything I have splurged on lately...

Flashlight: Yeah I spent $60 for a Fenix. People asked me why, and when we went camping, they found out why. Someone thought his Mag 6D was the sh!t, but I whipped out my 2AA Fenix and showed him how this thing is just as good. Oh and of course they loved my light after they found out it had strobe abilities and we could party it up in the tent.

Monitor: Why would I spend $1000 on a 27" when people buy cheap TN 24"s for sub 400? I don't know. Or my friend who buys a 37" 1080p screen. We calibrated both screens and it was day and night that my Dell 2707 slaughtered the cheap panels.

Cell Phone: Why did I get a $600 N82? People were like wtf you don't even have touchscreen, I want an iPhone over that. Well guess who was laughing when we got lost in Tahoe and I whipped out the GPS in my phone and the whole caravan followed me? Seriously.

The other day my friend was selling his 52" DLP. 720p, piece of crap, blah blah, blah blah blah you name it. I wouldn't pay even $800 for it even its a discount. I've showed tons of people TV on my Dell 2707, and they can agree it's far more impressive with my calibrated colors than on blown up 52". I wouldn't buy a large TV that's a piece of crap, and my parents agree too. That's why when we bought our 46" LCD, it had to be top of the line, not some cheap westinghouse crap, or some crap DLP.

Yeah, that would be excessive.

But I have paid $600 for a flashlight to hang on one of my AR's


Firearms are another thing I spend money on. I no more go for the cheapo crap, you get what you pay for.

If it is a handgun, and it doesnt say HK, Sig, or Kimber on the side, then as far as I am concerned it is not worth owning (except for the custom 1911 shops like Wilson, etc).

Hmmm I bought a used tennis racket for $65 (first time I've ever had a backup that matched my main) but that's really not bad, the stringign fees will be more expensive than the racket in a year or two.

Books. I go crazy at used book sales when they are half-off the used price, but I also buy various special and first editions autographed by the author(s). I currently have a few hundred in my car until I can make shelf space for them.

Firearms.

Props from movies or television shows that I like.

Car audio equip about 2 years ago spent $1200 on HU, amp, and comp fronts (no subs)

Paintball (Marker+equip is about $1000 I spent in the past 6 months on it)

Computer+Dell 2407 ($2500 on last spring and still a great system)

Pioneer Kuro 5080 HDTV ($2500 this spring)

Cutlery ($175 on 2 knives so far, both Global knives one is a 7 inch santoku the other is a 4 inch pearing)

Home audio is going to be a future purchase, but will include it because I am looking at ~$3k speakers and about $5k total but am going to wait to move to a bigger place for it (no where NEAR the space I would need to make it sound good)

DSLR+Lenses I am going to buy in the next month or so and spend $1500 or so

Surefire Aviator $200 and everybody goes "why would you spend that much on a FLASHLIGHT!?!?!?!?!" Then the first time its needed (or want to show it off in the night) they all go "WOW that thing is AWESOME, I want one." This past weekend was visiting relatives and my uncle got out his massive 3d/4d (dont know which) Maglite and was playing with it. I pull out my Surefire and about the only thing he could come up with as to how his was better is that he could use his as a club if need be. He also said "Well you have fresher batteries thats for sure" when we put them up on the wall and mine hosed his completely . Thank you Surefire.

Edit: almost forgot skydiving $200 for a tandom jump, and a friend and I will be getting certified after college ($2000), and getting our own equipment ($2000 for some used stuff).

I guess beer would be mine. I don't think twice about buying a $12 bottle of belgian ale.

But a lot of people would look at that and shake their head thinking "Why would you buy one bottle when you can get a 12 pack of "ok" stuff or a case of really bad stuff for the same price?"

Other than that, I'm pretty frugal or value minded. Which is why I also have a case of Miller Lite sitting next to my $12 bottle of Belgians. Can't be a high roller every time I drink.

I guess other than $300 22" monitor I bought when 22's first came out, my splurging will be on:
-Custom running shoes ($200+?)
-Suunto heart rate monitor watch ($$$)
-New carbon road bike ($$$$) and cycling equipment

Bowling balls. I'd drop $200+ on a ball if I really wanted it, most people don't understand why when there are all of those free balls to use at the bowling alley already.

And I don't have one yet, but I have a growing desire to own a powerful laser pointer. I have no good reason for this, but I want one more every day. I would just lay in bed and pop balloons with it. My wife would get sick of this very quickly.

And lastly, if I was a billionaire the one thing I think I'd splurge on that no one would understand would be to pay the singer from Rush and the singer from The Darkness do a duet for me... maybe Islands in the Stream or whatever. So I could say that I financed the very worst song in the history of humanity. No song could ever approach the terribleness of that duo.
