What are some testing methods to tell if a substance is what I am told it is.

I ordered a product from China. Not going to say what it is. But they told me it was 99% purity. What are some of the types of tests that can be run to tell if something is indeed what it is claimed to be? Just need a few of the methods so I can google them and call around and find a lab to do the testing. Thanks!

We test lots of stuff in our met lab at work. Everything is wildly different depending on what you're measuring, and what state it's in. The equipment for measuring solid metal is radically different than measuring an organic liquid.

In short... I like it better when the op isn't posting
 
Back when I did dope I was the dope dealers tester. When he got a new batch in he'd give me free bags to tell him how much to cut it. In rehab the counselor thought I was nuts because of it. With the way dope is these days I'd agree but the me 10 years ago would of still been the tester.

But Dance Safe? LOL, I googled that and it looks like testing narcotics at raves lol. I'm not talking about anything illegal, illicit or recreational!!!

Nonsense, otherwise you would name it.

Unless its a liquid, then absorb it with a tampon and put in your butt.
 
as others have said, GCMS. FTIR would also work I think, assuming you are talking about an organic compound. XRD will work with metallic or ceramic materials (save for glasses) to a certain degree, while XRF, OES, and ICP will tell you composition but not structure.
 
FTIR is useless for actual characterization unless you're comparing it to a known sample/spectrum. If it's organic, gc-ms might work, so long as the compound is volatile enough to fly on the gc. Lc-ms would be a better choice, but you would need to do some testing to find the right column or set of mass spectrometry conditions to gr t an accurate ID.

you can use XRF on glasses and ceramics, we do it every day in our lab

Doesn't matter, just tell them you think it's ecstasy or something and they will test it and list it on their website exactly what is in it. Gonna be the cheapest access to GS/MS you will find. And you can mail it in, you don't have to go to a rave.
 
Your first test should be for density. Simply check mass per volume and compare with the textbook value. If that matches, go down the rabbit hole of suliblity testing, and reactions to common staining solutions, boiling/melting point testing, reactivity testing - pick up a chemistry text book. Depending on the substance, there may be simple evidence-reactions (like pregnancy tests and other indicator strips) or you may indeed have to determine molar mass using a spectrometer, or do LC/GC.

You may want to filter/distill whatever you have to remove impurities before testing, so you get a clearer signal.
