What are some testing methods to tell if a substance is what I am told it is.

I ordered a product from China. Not going to say what it is. But they told me it was 99% purity. What are some of the types of tests that can be run to tell if something is indeed what it is claimed to be? Just need a few of the methods so I can google them and call around and find a lab to do the testing. Thanks!

Yup, flame test is good. Solubility in water or oil is also potentially good. Once you get it dissolved you might be able to precipitate something.

However, if it's a drug you'll mostly be measuring the binder that way.

Oh, I see, you want to test for purity. If it's an element or a salt, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy would work. If it's an organic compound I'm not sure.

Also, for $100 or so Dance Safe will test it for you but they will only tell you the substances found but not the purity.
