Sorry for the trip down memory lane..
Slash and Michael Jackson? That might be worth a listen if I can find it.

As for the question, pretty much any solo in any Metallica song (whether it's James or Kirk) is definitely badass (yes, even the new stuff) and anything by Slash. It's been a while since I've listened to it, but I believe "Patience" has a really good solo, too. All acoustic. Great stuff.

IMO Slash is overrated. Yes, he's damn good, but he's not a guitar god. If you wanna hear some really screaming solos, just get any Satriani disc. The Extremist in particular.

I'll give another vote for some old-school Metallica: One, Master of Puppets, Fade to Black, etc etc. There are so many great ones.

Freebird is far and away my favorite solo. Gary's and Collins' dueling is just so awesome.

No More Tears by Ozzy has a short but sweet solo in it.

Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson is a 5 minute solo :) Quite possibly the best guitar work I've ever heard. Its so precise and controlled.

Dream Theater has some awesome solos as well. Petrucci is an incredible guitarist. (Although Portnoy is better at what he does IMO) Some good songs from them include The Glass Prison, Fatal Tragedy, and also search for John Petrucci's 8 minute solo on Kazaa or something. Simply astounding.

get the 18 minute live copy of Dave Matthew's Band's "41" and about 8 minutes in, there is an awesome violin part.

There are not nearly enough Metallica solos on that Best Solo list..

Metallica - Ride the Lightning

has an awesome solo.

Iced Earth - Travel in Stygian is a pretty good song with an okay solo.

zakk wylde is an absolute guitar god. great stuff with ozzy. also check out his band, black label society (zakk actually plays every instrument on the albums, sans drums). friggin awesome.

also, stevie ray vaughan, his 'texas flood' performance on the 'live at the el mocambo' dvd (also on his 'blues at sunrise' album). its one of the most amazing performances ive ever seen/heard.

One of my favorite solos of all time is Tool's Third Eye. From 11:30 in the song all the way until 12:15 is some of the purest sonic ecstacy I've ever heard. This ranks as my #1 all time guitar/drum solo.

<--- nodding enthusiastically

here's another vote for all of Satriani's Extremist, and Slash's work. Both those guy had expression down.

The problem with people like Hammet and Malmsteen is they could shred like nobody's buisness but when it came to emotion, they were like plastic versions of the real deal. It's like when Hammet took lessons from Satch way back in the day, he learned to play fast but didn't learn to be a musician first and player second. He's improved in recent years though.
