The guitar solo on the last song on PIL's "generic" album (song is entitled "Ease" IIRC) will just make you go

It's pretty over the top even by Steve Vai standards.

Harry Nilsson - Jump Into The Fire has awesome solos. WARNING! Will blow your sub if you play it too loud.

Boston - More than a feeling is also good.
Lynyrd Skynard - Free Bird

The solo in "One" is also worth a listen.

Most Hammet solos are worth a listen. What I like about the solo in Puppets is the way they slow it down for the solo. I think it's really cool. Also he has a killer stretch in there. Try playing it, you'll see what I mean.

*sigh* I probably couldn't even play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" these days. I haven't picked up a guitar in years.

You're right tho...pretty much everthing Hammet did pre-Black Album is to be filed under "Bad Ass"

While you may not like the songs after the Black album, I dont think his guitar playing skills diminished along with the quality of the songs. He can play that friggin ESP.

No More Tears has a pretty good solo. Not the best ever, but it's good. Great guitar song overall.

SO many!

Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (slight return) (or any Hendrix for that matter)
Eric Clapton - Cocaine
Eagles - Hotel California (Life In The Fast Lane is a good one, too)
Cream - White Room (lots of Cream! Crossroads, Sunshine Of Your Love, etc.)
AC/DC - Back In Black
Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You (OMG this song r0x0r5 my b0x0r5 :D, anything off of Zeppelin I, II, III)

There's lots more, too, but I'll save some for other members to name.

I like the old GnR stuff, 'Estranged' and 'November Rain' come to mind. Didn't Slash do a song with Michael Jackson...that had a good solo too.

Sorry for the trip down memory lane..

Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do?
Stevie Ray Vaughn - heh...take your pick
Lynyrd Skynrd - Freebird

Also, I invoke the name of MUCMAN to outline some of the awesome drum solos by Neil Peart

Anything by Yngwie Malmsteen. Also Whitesnake's album "Slip of the Tongue" has some great solo's too. This was the one Steve Vai guested on the cause Adrian Vandenburg broke his arm. Vai is a fantastic guitar player.

CCR - heard it through the grapevine .. has an amazing like .. ten minute solo in the version that i have .. and it's great.

Of course though, metallica pre black album is like all amazing. I like the ride the lightening album .. fade to black is wicked for solo.

AC/DC

lol @ TallGeese

All live Rush albums have awesome drum solo's by Neil. Some of the best Rush guitar solos are : La Villa Strangiato, Analog Kid, Freewill, Turn the Page (heck all of em :p)

It's not complex but the solo to Marillion's song Easter is really nice... since you are a Floyd fan, I bet you would dig their sound.

Dream Theater is peppered with amazing solos, and so are all those neoclassical guitarists from the 80's (Yngwie, Tony McAlpine, Randy Rhodes, ...)

One of these days I am going to make a mix CD of just solos :)

Randy Rhoads is God but you've gotta listen to stuff w/ Zakk Wylde. There's a reason he plays with Ozzy. This guy blows my mind everytime I see him.
