What are some of the most impressive looking games you've seen in recent years?

I've always thought WoW looked amazing, I never played it but the screenshots are incredible. I also really like the art direction by the company who created Odin Sphere and the other game (Demon Blade or something like that).

A couple of years ago there was a comic book artist (Joe Madureira) who was working on the art for a game that looked pretty cool. I can't remember the title or if the game was ever released but the early screenshots were incredible. Anyone remember that project?

Crysis obviously. Apart from that, the Delta Sector mod for Far Cry 1 looks almost as good, and UT3 has a lot of excellent custom maps with some pretty original ideas and artwork.

Crysis.

As far as upcoming games, Dante's Inferno, God of War III, and the new Castlevania all look simply amazing.

STALKER. The graphics engine isn't the best, or most optimized, but the atmosphere of the game is amazing. I love wandering through a supposedly empty part of the zone and then suddenly hear a horde of mutants attack a stalker checkpoint.

Eve Online. Visually one of the best ever but I didnt care for it game wise due to its high learning curve and training requirements. Sure was pretty to look at though.

At first Fallout 3 looked cool then you realize how everything looks the same to each other. You can't tell one Vault from the other, the towns all look the same, textures all look the same, it just got very boring cus everything just looked too similar.

Gonna follow the crowd - Crysis and Warhead :p

Then nothing for a long time. Seriously, the game is that beautiful.

Really liking NFS:Shift, especially the cockpit view. Gran Turismo 5 on the trailers? :p

Fear 2

You really have to pay attention. The level designers went into such detail that levels like the school, all the books on the shelves have different names, there are notes on the floor and walls all different. Things written on chalk boards in the different rooms all different, it took a whole lot of time to do that detail. Most level designers just cut and paste the same asset over and over.

I remember being very impressed by Doom 3 the first time I played the demo.

Honestly? World of Warcraft still looks good to me today. Not because it has great technical detail, but because they dare to use all of the colors that nature has given them. I'm tired of dark, depressing games where dark grey is the brightest color you come across.

Oblivion and Mirrors Edge have the best colors of any game I've played. Wow looks like gears of war when you compare it to Mirrors edge.

CryEngine 2 is capable of producing amazing looking screenshots that the games never look like.

Despite that, the Crysis series is still very pretty.

If we're including art style, I loved Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and the use of bloom in that game. It was almost like playing a Pixar movie. I loved it.

STALKER's atmosphere makes it one of the truly terrifying game experiences out there. I think they pull it off because they're not afraid to break rules (enemies you can't see, pitch black darknesses, etc.) to make you feel vulnerable.

The Call of Juarez games did a wonderful job of capturing the feel of spaghetti western movies. The new one has some particularly gorgeous lighting going on.

Gears of War/Mass Effect have shown that Unreal 3 tech can obviously be put to very effective use.

Source engine still has best-in-class character animation when used by the right hands (i.e. Valve).

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Edit: Prince of Persia 2008, though a complete departure from the Sands of Time series in terms of story (which was probably a good thing), was also very pretty in places.

I've played all 3 games mentioned here (well, demo of Mirror's Edge) and I don't see where this comment even comes from. WoW covers an entire PLANET and its myriad of colors and locations. Mirrors Edge is in like 1 city... I don't think you ever played WoW or if you did, you never saw much of the game.

WoW is visually impressive with all settings cranked.

A lot of games from 2004 still look nice, like Far Cry, Doom 3 and Painkiller.
