Man, I used to wake up in the morning, boot up the computer and load AOL, click sign in, then when I'd get home frommiddle school I would only have to wait about 15 minutes before I got a connection. It was AWESOME!

Hahaha... the days of AIM punting. That was a fun time. I remember that you could also blank out IM screens by using partial HTML. Like you make a link but never close it with a </A> and so the text never ends up showing. Or you could send batches of complicated HTML and it would lag the other computer (depending on who is faster)

1. I definitely used to mailbomb people and IM bomb people. now that I look at it, AOL had some crappy programming back then, if you could IM people quickly to make their AOL freeze and sign them off.

2. I used those AOL proggies thinking how leet they were, but really they were basic macros.

3. I used to phish. I think everyone used to do that. Even after aol added the warning "we will never ask for your password" I could still get l/p's so easily.

4. I used to DL pr0n from AOL! i thought i was so cool cause it was so hard to get pr0n back then!

5. I used to go into lobbies and spam "THE KILLER IN SCREAM IS HER BOYFRIEND AND THE FUNNY GUY" over and over then leave, and continue. and this was the night I returned from seeing the movie.

wow, AOL really brought out the loser in me. good thing i'm not like that anymore 😀

pretty much the same. aol introduced me to newsgroups back the day. and i got a lot of warez off their server rooms. I use to serve as well...those were the days..

What ... Prodigy?? nope, never used aol. Almost all my time in those early years were spent playing MUDs.

oh man...

go into a chat room and tell people to press "alt, and then S, and then S" for a cool sound to play.

you could just watch as half the chat room signed off.

LoL. Reminds me of a free MMO I used to play called rose. When the server would get laggy, I'd shout "Hit Alt+F4 and the lag will go away!" and then laugh as half the server ended their session.

Still works in CS:S.

"How do you view the scores?"
"F10"
*User has quit*

Alt-F4 also works in some chatrooms still.

Hey, it's nasty, but it's fun sometimes.

Haha used to see sht like that in EQ all the time. Someone would start bitching about lag in ooc. Someone else would suggust using /e as it helps reduce server load.

Good stuff.

Programmed this using Visual Basic 3.0 with my 486 machine w/ my 14.4 kbps connection. That's between my sophmore year and junior year in HS.

Basically, it's a copy and paste from other people source code and added-in some self-defined logic.

And now I'm done w/ college and working in an aerospace/defense company. Not bad huh? eh!

AOL did give me some influence on me to study Computer Science, because I don't know what else I could do after high school 6 years ago.

I downloaded warez, IM/mail bombed people, used the proggies... the typical stuff that every kid on AOL did because they thought it made them the coolest thing to ever happen.

A friend of mine got put on some sort of probation or something for mail bombing this guy with 3,000 e-mails... consdering he was on 28.8 at the time, I felt like AOL should have given him some sort of sheer determination award, but it wasn't meant to be.

Looking back on it, I can only shake my head in bemusement; it was a phase I went through, and now I'm over it.

beyonddc, to be honest, that looks like a program I used. Small world.

both wasn't avalible in my area 6 years ago,

LIAR!!!!

I had it on Mac too, which I believe came out a little after the windows version. So I was a n00b to windows people when I first got online.

macwarez, which they then disabled that room, and macfilez came to play, then they disabled that room as well, then zelifcam (macfilez backwards) came and stayed!

Cheers to a fellow MW/MFer! I remember those good days of <><, fakes, MM's, and getting chat bombed by the PC guys. There was also the "elite room" a private chat where all the "cool/elite" people went to hahah. It sucked in there too. But all that was exciting and cutting edge internet stuff at the time. People eventually went to IRC and had to get real ISPs because anyone with AOL would be banned from everything heh.

I also remember going to the "Wacraft" channel to get IPs to play people in Wc2 before Kali came out.

<- was a guide back in the 90's.

oh man, i had forgotten about that.. good times.

another one was putting an html img tag in the IM for an image on a:\. You could put in a bunch of them in a row and their computer would freeze as it searched for the file and ground the floppy drive for a few minutes (bad side, it would happen to you too :-( )

1) I used to use the DISTORT thing that blurred your whole window up. I had a legitimate profile with a lot of stuff followed by a distort, and people would have trouble reading all the text... hahaha. Distort chat rooms and ppl go WTF?

2) Build versions 3.5.1416 and prior were vulnerable to &#770; crash

3) Roll dice in chat rooms and flood.

4) Mailbomb ppl rofl

5) Text faders

6) Play sound in regular AOL chats. You could play the Windows 98 welcome song cuz half the people ran 98 and people woudl be like WTF?!?!?

BBSs FTW. And AOL was never cool nor l337,

QFT. A BBS I was a member of used to play this game against other BBSs and beat the crap out of them. Wish I could remember the name of it. I recall svaing up lots of money for nuclear strikes.

That.. and VGA Planets. Anyone play that? I was thinking about starting that up if there was any interest in a vintage PBM game.

Before they were AOL they were QuantumLink, back in my Commodore 64 days there was a way to get it for free. Can't remember what we did. Boy was it screaming on my brand new 1200 baud smart modem! 😛
