Have you thought about composer names? For example, Mozart, Bach and Haydn? The problem there is when you start to run out and have to rely on names like Buxtehude. :D

My department uses another cool convention, naming the machines after mathematicians. For example, Laplace, Hilbert, and Markov. The printers have their own convention which I'm not sure I get, but the cleverset of the printer names is Guttenberg.

That's what we do for our lab.

Either Ski Resorts (local/non-local) or large mountains.

The main IS Department uses Greek Gods....how cliche. ;)

I can't believe this one wasn't brought up.

I use Looney Tunes at work.

Two reasons, 1.) There are a lot more than I will probably have servers and 2.) Each name somehow relates to something so I can easily remember what one to go to.

Example...

Daffy - My Workstation ;)
Bosko - The old enterprise software server
Porky - One of the database servers
Foghorn / Leghorn - Two test servers :)

etc. etc.

I also use Bugs, Marvin, Elmer, and Sylvester; Tweety and Roadrunner are in the works. :)

(Didn't want to give away all of the layout of course :))

we use a boring yet functional convention, we use state, city, dept, workstation or server and 2 digit number. IE GAATLRACS01

I used the 7 dwarves convention when I worked at Microsoft. :)

I had 8 machines total. It went something like this if I remember right:

Snow White - Main E-Mail / Office box
Happy - The one that had games on it. ;)
Doc - The debugger machine
Sneezy - Virus Scanner test box
Dopey - The Cyrix box
Grumpy - Stress test box
Bashful - DEC Alpha test box (different from the rest)
Sleepy - Can't remember, I didn't use him much, that's why he was sleepy. :)

That's what we've done. We have Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, etc.

We also have some named after philosophers: Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Descartes, etc...

We have others named after astronomers/cosmologists/scientists: Hubble, Einstein, Hawking, etc...

I copied my school's naming schema and I now name all my new computers after Biblical characters. I named my old box Job since he was constantly tormented but remained faithful :) I'm sure you can find an appropriate name for new servers with a little Bible research.

I've got mine all named after simpson characters, with servers being more major names (Homer, Bart, ect.) and clients more obscure characters (Ralph, ect.)
