I must be missing something here. What is the connection between taxidermy and home-schooling?

That's what I would like to know.

my father did taxidermy when i was very little and there used to be stuffed and mounted animals all over the house. my favorite was a squirrel and i used to carry it around with me where ever i went. needless to say, i don't find her hobby strange at all.

she's homeschooled and likes taxidermy, in other words she's a redneck. She probably lives up in the mountains somewhere and has at least 1 goat.

Hmm, the most disturbing thing to me about this is that she mounts rats that she raised. I don't have problems with taxiderming (what is the verb for this?) roadkill cats or squirrels her dogs killed or wild deer she shot or something, but breeding a rat and having it as a pet, and then killing it and mounting it, just seems wrong to me. Maybe if they died natural deaths it wouldn't be as bad, but she doesn't explain how they died.

Actually, she has three goats...

<< We live on five acres, and we have lots of animals. I really do love animals alot !
I have 3 nubian dairy goats (I milk them), a miniature horse, 3 dogs, 2 cats, 13 chickens, a peahen, a guinea, a tarantula, a giant african millipede, and my favorite pet, my ball python, Scales.

It sounds to me like she loves animals and respects them! I've got no problems with someone who does this to an animal who dies of natural causes... I think that it is comendable that she has the willpower to actually do something she loves instead of getting sucked into the mainstream and trying to pose as something she is not.

Is it just me, or does this sound like bestiality? :)

Now just think about this... What if you replaced "animals" with kids... She'd have 27 kids, and stuff the dead ones to mount on her wall. But she'd really love them... Just kinda serial killer-esque if you ask me :)

lol some replys are pretty good...

<< That's a strange hobby for anyone, IMO. >>
<<almost as strange as DIY audio:p >>

That's below the belt there.

<< She's home-schooled... what do you expect? ;)

Well no offense, but the reason I thought geoff's comment was funny was because the only home schooled people I've met are either nerdy and/or weird. And when I see those spelling bees on TV, the top 3 are often home schooled and they seem to speak with a "home-schooled" accent. I just find it a bit odd to have a kid join a special play group with other home school kids to have a chance to socialize.

So..
If you are home schooled then you are weird
Amy is home schooled
Amy is passionate about skinning animal carcasses
People think skinning animals is weird

The connection is that:
Home schooled people are weird and Amy is no exception because she lusts for skinning animals.

Please no flames from home schooled people... by posting on anandtech you only prove my point.

Some comment made me recall this. I don't think it's all that bad though. She might want to try and socialize with non-taxidermy enthusiasts some time though.

!!!!!!!!!

WTF?!

[edit] Does that website specialize in FRIGGIN WEIRD news? Other headlines:

-Dog survives after being thrown off bridge
-Two-headed calf living longer than expected
-Shark kept in bar tank gets freedom
-Inmate apparently slips on own feces, dies
-Sex doll mistaken for slaying victim
-College student arrested for 'being stupid' in Aspen

What is this, Ripley's Believe it or not?

Cool! I have no problems with her hobby, in fact I think it's great she has a hobby that SHE likes, and she doesn't care what others think. Taxidermy is perfectly legal, nothing strange there. And like it was said, there's $$$$ to be made there! And she obviously has talent!

I used to play role-playing games when I was younger, and majority of people around me thought it's a weird hobby. Now I spend my time in ATOT, and most of the people around me would think it's weird. Is she really different from you or I? To us her hobby might be weird. And there are propably people out there who think your (meaning all of you who find her hobby weird) hobbies are weird.

someone should skin her sick ass and mount it on a stick when she gets it...

:|

(sorry about the outburst but this is just the sickest thing ive seen since bonsai kittens and that produced a similar response in me but worse cuz then theyre actually alive...

Franguinho obviously doesn't realize this is a legal profession (plus he lives in his own sheltered little world).

I think it is weird because I'm the type of person that believes you should do certain things depending on your age. Like if you can become a lawyer at age 15, I would still think it to be healthier to go through school/college first because those experiences are also very important. But she is home schooled so she is already missing lots of those experiences, at least this will be something she can fall back on.

And I doubt she murdered her rats you crazy people...

let me clarify: yes i know its a profession, i just think that its one thing collecting roadkill and stuff and its another murdering an animal in cold blood to make "such a pretty mount". second, no sexism intended here, but 15 year old girls should be going out and stuff, have a boyfriend, play sports or something... i dunno. im sorry but if at 15 youre totally chill with cutting open carcasses youve picked up from the road outside your trailerpark then only jesus himself knows what this girl will do when she gets bored of the animals...

second the implications in the page are very clear. if you did bother to read the whole thing i think it can very safely by inferred from the page that she DID kill the rats. or did the whole family die at the same time from natural causes?

Only if you're into MadLibs. And if you replace "animals" with pillows, she'd sew 27 pillows and stuff them and have pillows to sit on. I don't see the connection to serial killer here.

Ok...
I am homeschooled; I enjoy messing with computers, and browsing the AT forums; I am also an aquarist and my third hobby is playing the guitar. And I'm weird?
IMHO it is the issue of "I will stereotype all of your group, but you dare not make an un-flattering stereotype of my group." Ah, nevermind, that was just my mini-rant for the day...

jliechty - Don't listen to the anyone in OT... if you take em seriously you will just go crazy!

I can't believe how so many people here think that if someone doesn't follow the "norm" is crazy! Just because someone isn't like you doesn't mean they are a freak show! I didn't see anywhere on her site that she killed the rats, so anything you guys say about that is just an assumption without any proof.
