I personally love well implemented pvp, eg 1997-99 UO, DoTA map for WC3-TFT. In fact i'd rather pvp (fight other players) than anything else, period (again, providing it's well implemented). That isn't to say I don't enjoy other games.
I have 1 younger bro who I barely spoke with after the age of around 14-15 and have seen once in the last 6 yrs. I have always been competitive, sports, games, whatever, sometimes too much so; my anger has been known to get the better of me when I lose (anger at myself). But I wouldn't give it up for anything. Fighting against other people is the biggest rush you can get in the world of gaming, no contest. It's adrenaline Gurck, plain and simple. And as for wanting to gank/be cooler/etcetc, that doesn't really apply to me. I enjoy pvp for the challenge. For example, a game of DOTA in which my team completely rolls over the opposing team is very "meh". I much prefer a well practiced opponent to a n00b any day of the week.
This is important to remember: it is all about practice. I used to play warcraft 3 online, regular 1v1 games. I barely maintained a 50% win ratio after over 500 games simply because I couldn't put the hours in. Nor did I want to (the best players put 60+hrs a week in, easily). If you find yourself getting "pwned" a lot in a decent multiplayer game (read NOT WoW), it is almost inevitably because you haven't played enough.
Oh and to make it perfectly clear, WoW pvp is a poor example to use here, extremely poor.
EDIT: just read the above post mentioning UT. I would like to add that I dislike such random pvp as unreal tourney, quake, etc. IMO they're nothing more than near-mindless twitch fests and hold next to no appeal for me. From a pvp perspective I exclusively play tactical shooters and other more involved pvp games. I'm more advanced donchaknow
