What a dumb decision by our company owner

We have a good 70-80 cars between our main lot and a smaller back lot. It's going to take 2 days to do the job and in the mean time we'd have to find our own parking. There's a small lot across the street for some small businesses but that lot only holds about 30 cars and I'm sure the business owners will be delighted to have us overfill their lot. I fail to see why this couldn't be done over the weekend when the office is closed.

I'll give you $20 if you tell this to your company owner's face.

Working weekends = paying extra. Doing 2 lots at the same time = less money. See this is why you're a grunt bitch and not the company owner.

I'm sure he thought of it... and thought of the hassles and/or extra cost of having the company come twice.

This is why you're not the one making that decision. It costs a BOATLOAD more money for after hours work and weekend could be 2.5 times pay. So for cost reaons it's done during normal working hours, outside of that is overtime pay. And by doing it all at once instead of staggering you don't have four days of work where you're paying all that extra for supervisors and such. Only 16 hours of their time vs. 32.

OH DARN. You're inconvenienced for two whole days! The horror!

Seriously man, you need to access your car two times a day. MAYBE 4 if you are the type that goes out to lunch everyday. So what if you have to walk an extra 5 minutes each time? Have you never wasted 10-20 minutes a day on the company's clock?

Would you prefer that they shut down for the two days and not pay anyone for the time they missed?

I think this shows where the problem is. The owner didn't give the common courtesy to his employees saying why he chose weekdays and asking for their cooperation.

Let's see. 80 cars. I'd guess around 20,000 extra to do it on the weekend.

Alright folks we can do this during the week or weekend. If we do it on the weekend I'll be taking an extra 250 dollars out of everybody's paycheck to cover the difference. All in favor say AYE!

It is not in the companies interest to make sure their employee's are happy.

(sad but true)

His decision probably cost him that much in lost productivity and morale.

Maybe he should just make everyone happy by firing the OP, which will save him enough money so that he can have the pavers come out on the weekend.

Problem solved.

The smart thing to do would've been to do one lot one weekday, then the other later so that you're only out one lot at a time...may or may not cost more though.

But, really, who fucking cares?

I came in here thinking, "Wow, terrible company." Then I read the responses.

It's ok, I'm still with you :)

It is just about being polite, that's all I was saying. THAT is what is lost. People can understand the decision, but treat the employees like you give a damn about them.

yeah since being polite to your employees is going to make sure htey have a job.

The company owner has a job to make sure the company does not waste money. one of the ways he did that is having the place repaved on on one day an dmakeing people walk.

don't like it? get another job. its not about being polite its a business not a damn charm school.

You are obviously missing the point. I think people can understand the financial decision he made, but a little respect for the the employees would be nice. (ie an email saying, I am sorry for the inconvenience but this has to be done, blah blah, just stick it out for two days, blah blah).

It really isn't that hard to practice common courtesy if you are a normal human. Unfortunately, I think you and the owner don't have that going for you.

It's decisions like the one your boss made that made him the boss and you the one working for him. Or something like that. :)

There was renovation going on and people were angry because the worker's trucks were parked in the parking lot and they had to park on the street.
