Well my HDD came...

In the box
Unwrapped
Another one

So its not an impressive pack job, but it seems to work just fine - the partition is taking a long time though, my next biggest drive is 1/6 the size so i'll be here a while, hehe.

:)

I just ordered 2 from them
I was just thinking that if its wrapped in bubble pak and its not the pink non static stuff, it might touch the PCB components underneath and zap something
I'll call them first thing in the A.M. to see what I can work out
Doesnt seem to be anyplace to give special instructions from the cart checkout

@Lanyap - thnx for code, saved me $20 - you da man

And, FWIW - WD aint selling their platters to rivals anymore - keeping em all to themselves

Looks good enough to me, at least much better than what other people were complaining about in their reviews. Gonna grab one asap.

@jdoggg12

Seems to be adequate, though I will admit it could have been a little better. Which warehouse did yours come from?

Besides the 500 gigs and platter sizes?

HDDs are all similar other than size, platter size, cache, interface (Sata or Pata). This drive has 2x320gb platters, and that high density = better speed.

I guess I'm greedy......waiting for closer to $100 .

It came from the southern California warehouse.

The Seagate drive has 250 gigs per platter... I can't really see how this drive would be that much faster than my drive.

OK. Imagine that without the brown paper around the drive. The last OEM drive I got from Newegg came floating in half a box of peanuts. It came from the NJ warehouse. It was a Seagate drive and miraculously, it worked. I want one of these drives, but I'm going to wait until I can get either a retail box or an OEM from someone else.

Maybe the key is to order something else with it? The box came with a tuniq tower and mx518 mouse in addition to the HD

I agree. If the 640 was faster, it wouldn't be enough to 'feel' I figure.
But.....there is that warm, fuzzy, geek feeling you get with owning the latest/greatest :D.

It looks like it depends on what else you get with the OEM HD, and from which place it ships from.

Last order I got had pathetic packaging, and I had to RMA the HD. I should have took pics.

Maybe we should all take pics, and compare notes.

Well, against my better judgement I ordered one anyway. The last OEM drive I ordered was by itself; this time, I ordered it along with a heatsink and motherboard. I'll let you know in what condition it arrives.

I sent a note to NE about the packing problem with a link to the NE HD reviews, this thread and jdoggg12's pics.

Can't wait for 1.2GB.

Man me either, I hate only having a 800 MB drive. I run out of space so fast with it. The 1.2 gb drive should help though, hopefully it will be a PATA drive too I hear those are screamers.

:)

No kidding. The move from MFM to IDE should be astounding!

Now only if I could get this SCSI Zip drive to work.

What is this SCSI interface you speak of? This sounds like the new fangled techno geek stuff you think of when you think of the distant future like 1999.

Well, if it makes anyone feel better, I ordered this drive (from the SoCal shipping department) and got a very well packaged OEM drive with this thick paper cardboard wrapping and it was in the middle of a full box of peanuts. I guess they took notice from all the negative shipping reviews people were giving on their drives.

Well I should have kept my mouth shut. I just got one and it came laying at the bottom of a box of peanuts. Guess they would have cussioned the shock if the box hit the roof of the ups truck.

I ordered 2 drives late Sun nite, called on Mon 9 AM to ask for better packing - guy said already shipped, too late.
So I told him folks are unhappy with current proceedure, and he said he will pass it on.
My order (bunch of stuff) was split between TN and Ca. - the drives came from Ca. today with the heavy brown crap paper.
At least it was in factory anti static bag
The stickers said DOM Mar 20, so it appears I got some very "fresh" drives - less than 2 weeks ago.

Just got my drive today from their NJ warehouse, only peanuts on top and sides, but at least the drive itself was wrapped tightly with bubble wrap. It's the only thing I ordered, DOM dated Mar 15, seems to be working fine.

I just ordered 3 to replace my 74gb raptor and 2 500gb Seagate 7200.10 drives. They will be delivered tomorrow from California. I sure hope I have better packing then what I am seeing! What's weird is that I have bought all my drives oem from the egg for the past several years. They have all worked perfect and were packed well in bubble wrap and peanuts. Hearing that they are shipping some in paper instead of bubble wrap scares me, to say the least....
