Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB $101 @ Amazon

But you are going down to a caviar blue. Everyone knows the blacks are the best to get. A real shame about the Thailand flooding messing up everything.

great news, that means the flood (heh) of new drives are about to arrive. There were NO 1TB FEAX to be had at regular stops after flood. Have them also at superbiiz.
My last buy was 4 drives @$78 and got my first bad FEAX drive ever (Thailand Sep 13). Worked fine and passed WDC tester, but had bad vibrations - guessing off center or out of balance platter.

bankster55, I like you sig. That's cool if it's true (and I believe it is). I didn't even have internet in '99, nor did I know anything about a computer.

just do this: Call WD and do an Advanced RMA on your Black drive. Don't return the black drive and pay the $89 fee they'll charge you. $89 for a 1TB Black 64MB sounds pretty hot to me 😀

though it will be a refurbished drive though...

FWIW, saw this drive at Best buy for 149.99... for a B&M that seems like a fair deal in the midst of current pricing

Do you guys recommend a Black for a htpc build? These are louder than spinpoints right? 2TB or 1TB?

I haven't been keeping up but have the newer 1TB+ drives been under $100 at all for the last couple of months? I was reading on slickdeals and someone said they had recently picked up a 1TB for $72.

I have a MC nearby and was thinking about picking up an i3+mb plus a video card with hdmi for htpc + light gaming.

As long as you have media on the network, why not just get a 80GB SSD and then stream any media you need?

Good luck to anyone getting a HD from Amazon. I've never gotten one from them, but knowing how they pack stuff (or rather, don't pack stuff), I wouldn't be too trusting of their ability with hard drives.

I haven't received a poorly-packed HDD from Amazon since July/August of last year and I get about a dozen per month from them...

Actually I have the new WD Live thing and I tried steaming. There was stuttering when I tried to play some 720p stuff. It might be my network settings so I'll try playing around with it.

80GB SSD for the moment might be a good idea until prices go down a little bit on the platter drives. I'll look into it.

I kind of want to make a machine that can play some games also. Mostly for my girl to play on so we can lan up, so that's the other reason I wanted a deep storage option. The Amazon description says these caviar blacks are good for gaming, so I might actually try to pick one of these up. I didn't think drives would go this high though.

still at superbiiz for $134
amazon packs great in a small carboard box with end bumpers then in the big box
I would never buy a refurb HDD even for $10
My 2 best drives for reliability are the FEAX 1TB and the Samsung 2TB
