Were you afraid to boot up the first computer you ever built?

I was a little worried that flames would shoot out of every orifice of the machine, but it worked fine.


Heh, a friend put together a computer, turned it on (it was working), but noticed a bad smell and took the side off and it was on fire.

Turns out his wall socket was bad and the computer was getting incredibly irregular power.

heh.
 
A litttle. I built it with my cousin. He had the experience and I was sort of going with him. It booted up no problem though and all was well.
 
I don't believe so but I still almost hold my breath when listening for that beloved beep at POST on systems I build. No POST means I have to troubleshoot the damn thing and spend even longer working on it.

LOL yeah thats what Im worried about... like its gonna blow up or something. 😛

Nor I were afraid when lit my first home made rocket at the age of 8, however 40 second later I was very afraid, because I started a 30 foot radius grass fire at the local cemetery that took 3 adults and 6 kids to put out.
 
Nah, I was excited to see my new creation at work. Even though I didn't really 'create' it. I just slapped parts together. Tab A -> Slot B. /me shrugs.

Though I did change a few things in my older brothers 286, booted it up and the mobo fried, all the parts(including all the PCI cards and CPU) were all fried. I was under STRICT orders not to TOUCH his computer while he was gone. Lets say I got a nice ass whoopin when he found out. (back then his top of the line 286 was like $1500 easy, maybe $2k)

I wouldn't say I was afraid, more like watching with great anticipation. Of course, it would not boot up. I spent the next 2-3 days trying to figure it out. Swapping in different parts from my existing pre-built PC. I finally took the MB, CPU, video card & memory back to the shop I bought some of the parts at. The guy at the shop connected a PS to it. When it didn't boot for him, he pushed down on the video card, and it booted right up after that. 😱 Never made that mistake again. 😛
 
Yep. To say nothing of the fact that it was a computer I was building for my mother-in-law. Thankfully, it has yet to give her a problem after almost 3 years.
 
Yeah pretty worried... It took me FOREVER too.. like two or three days... I was so nervous... and I think I had the voltage jumpers messed up so it wouldn't boot and I had to redo it...

Last machine I built I slapped together in a couple hours max... and of course no jumpers now... 🙂
 
Nope. But I did discover you can plug a Harddrive power cord backwards. Of course I did still have the power on at the time I plugged it in, and let the magic smoke out of a chip or two.

 
Nope. But it didn't work. I called my friend that helped me on this stuff.. and he found out that I didn't put on the mobo standoffs. :x
Put on the standoffs, and it worked!

Wait.. you forced a molex adapter in backwards with the power on?
