Ok perhaps you guys can help me decide what to do here.

I was sitting down at my desk at college about 10 mins ago. My friend knocked on the door and i got up to answer it my left leg gave out. More particularly my knee. So i got up and it felt weird.

As i walked back to my desk i found i couldn't put a lot of pressure on it. And then i found i couldn't extend it all the way.

Upon further inspection, it seems like there is something blocking it from extending all the way. I can see it swell up sort of when i extend it all the way, and it feels like there is something there blocking it. I kept trying to expecting a small pop and for everything to feel better, but all that happens is that blocked feeling increases and then it hurts.

Im going to the health center in the morning, is there any reason i should go tonight? Or is there anything i can try to see if i might not have to go?

-Kevin

Edit Update: Went to athletic center, nurse doesn't know, so i have an appt with athletic doctor at 415.

Edit: Went to the doctors and he diagnosed it. See last post.

Edit: Went back to the doctors. One tuesday my knee was hurting extremely badly. So he asked me how it is going, and i told him that i was in pain. And i told him i needed an MRI and XRAY done for the orthopedist. He was a little suprised about the MRI but they got both scheduled and i had the XRAY today. I also got a Narcotic Pain medication and crutches.

Orthopedist is on Oct. 9

Edit: Ok im in college and obviously, being a guy, is out hanging out with friends and stuff (As in girls). I want to stay working out as much as possible since I cant run everyday. Do you guys think it would be a bad idea to do upper body exercises while i wait for the diagnosis on my knees?

probably torn cartilage. Time to see a knee doc.

animal flex by univeral helped my knee injury. I stepped on a candy wrapper in our company stairwell and slipped with a big box I was carrying down.

My brother had a total knee blowout just rising with his legs from an 'indian stand'. Very very bad we found out.

Well how would i do that. I just stood up?

Arg.. Friday is my day off. I guess (based on what my friends said) that i definitely need to go to the health center.

I dont know if this is related, but when i have found that my knees and ankles hurt when i run. Occasionally during each run ill get sharp searing pains for no apparent reason on my knees and ankles. Could these two things be tied together?

As someone with quite a history of knee injuries, I'd say those are some weird symtoms combined.

The sharp pains in your knee's/ankles could be something along the line of either shin splints (sp?) or maybe a strained tendon?

As for the knee giving out, well if its swollen I would say alternate heat/ice and elevate it. Push on it a little bit, see if you feel any fluid? Have you ever had it give out on you before? Doesn't seem likely that you would have torn any ligaments from just standing up, especially if there was not a twisting motion involved. Plus you would be in a considerable amount of pain I would imagine.

Is it impossible to straighten? Or does it just hurt?

Take everything I say with a grain of salt, I'm just speculating but Ive had a lot of experience with knee injuries so my speculation is backed up by experience : )

Well i ran track last year and had to sit out the rest of the season with shin splints. The shin splints felts like something completely different. They actually hurt on impact and hurt constantly. With this, i just get a sharp searing pain in the joint every once in a while. I imagine it is what a pinched nerve might feel like, but i honestly have no clue. That is only really when i run or just sporadically.

This condition is new. I cant feel any fluid. I have never had something like this happen. It can sort of straight but after a point, everything around my knee (including my knee) feel extremely tight. The more pressure i use trying to straighten it into a locked position the more pressure i feel right around the knee cap. It doesn't hurt just sitting here, it just feels really tight, it begins to hurt when i try to extend it as i just described in the previous sentence.

It is worth noting that the pressure on the knee has increased over the past few minutes. I tried walking normally and the tightness is just so awkward my knee just gives out when i stride.

I know most of you aren't doctors, and i am going in the morning but anything you speculate i really appreciate :)

(On the plus side walking/limping back to my dorm from the bathroom, two guys saw me and asked if i was ok. And im pretty sure they were varsity football players, because they knew about the athletic complex pretty well; pretty cool. Maybe if i go to a cardinals game and limp around there Albert Pujols will stop and ask whats up :p )

I am another one that has significant knee injuries and subsequent operations, including reconstruction. This is only my opinion, but it sounds like loose cartiledge. When breaks down pieces have the tendency to "float" and can lock your knee. I speak from very painful experience.

Now if it is giving out as you say, it could be ligament issues. Let us know what happens.

Alright thanks a lot! I appreciate anyones opinion on this :) That is everyone else's initial reaction too, so hopefully for my sake it is something less severe.

The pressure could be loose cartilage or bone, most likely however it is just due to the swelling. If it doesn't get better in the morning consider getting it checked out.

its probably a torn or chipped miniscus. Same exact thing happened to me playing basketball tonite. Basically, a piece of cartlidge is logded in between the bones not allowing them to settle back in place.

Hey thats what one of those guys said in the hall. I thought he was messing around (Meniscus as in with water) but he mentioned cartilage and i was like OH.

That would be a possibility but i forgot to mention this until now. It i feel the same pressure but i cant bend my knee the correct way and i still feel pressure under the knee cap.

Everything feels like it is under the knee cap.

could be meniscal damage

Whatever it is, it's getting tight cause it's swelling. You're probably asleep by now, but RICE it on your own and take some advil. Go to the health center in the morning.

Good luck and hopefully it's not too serious

Just standing up is how my brother messed up his knee. He played tennis and was a runner...just standing up from sitting indian style popped one of his knees.

It sucks how just a little bit of a wrong move can mess them up.

He ended up having surgery to stop the locking that would happen, but the knee is still not right as cartilage doesn't grow back.

Ok so i haven't gone to the doctor yet, but i got up just now and my knee seems fine. Should i still go just as a precautionary measure or no?

Went to the health center and the nurse couldn't diagnose it (To be expected). So i have a 415 appt. for the athletic doctor...

Bingo! That happened to me in high school. It was lame and I needed to get surgery. It was lame because it didn't even hurt at all when it happened, it was just like, "Wow, my leg won't extend and I can't put pressure on it."

And after that, you get to experience the wonderful pleasure of bone on bone contact.

What kind of surgery is involved if by chance it is that :-\. (Ie: Will i miss the football games, and be out of class for a few days or is it a one day thing (<-somehow i doubt it))

Ok i just got back from the doctors.

The nurse practitioner (Doctor in training) saw me. He said that i have Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. He gave me anti-inflammatory pills and i have to do these stretch things.

Im not a doctor or anything, but i just dont see how stretches are going to help me :( . Ill give it a try though.

Awesome. He gave you NSAIDs (Ibuprofen/Naprosen/etc) in a lame attempt to mask a real problem.

Do yourself a favor; make an appt with an Orthopedist. Almost-Docs are looking out for themselves and won't tell you the truth about anything.

You need:

Right now = opiate pain killers (he'll never prescribe those b/c they're opiates)
Tomorrow = a REAL qualified doc to assess you for possible surgery and/or rehabilitation/exericse.
