They feed 10 about people per dish(crab balls had, 10 balls). Also, for a 10 course meal, I don't want to get stuff on just one dish. I believe it is about 2-3 times the size of a "regular" take-out portion.

I believe they had about 20 tables there for the wedding.

This is Washington D.C by the way.

Of course there are 10 servings of the various items. But, let's take the lobster dish for example. For a Chinese wedding reception in Toronto, that plate is double the size that the one that you had. 4 lobsters are used for each plate.

I believe there were at least 4 lobsters there, perhaps they were only 1 1/4 instead of 1 1/2. The dish does look larger when I was there compare to the pics here. Maybe I was just drunk? 😀

OMG! That looks like a normal chinese 9 or 10 course meal..

Damn I miss those. Shark fin soup, abalone, four seasons, long life noodles.. mmmmmmm.

erm..are u chinese?...coz, no offence, that wedding is NOT big bucks. In fact, i wanna bet they hardly lost or maybe even made money with that course, after tallying all the red packets.

Dude, the quality of that food is mediocre to say the least. The only thing relatively costly is the abalone, which, since sliced, lowers the cost. And that first dish, which i assume is the appetizer(cold dish) is almost laughable. And, no sharksfin? And come on...hunan fish? Its almost a MUST during an occasion such as wedding, to have a FRESH high-grade fish, meaning it will be steamed,...lower grade/cheaper fishes used for frying/sauced dish.

We eat the dishes in that wedding almost once a month(kid u not)...so in my eyes, that wedding is not high-end chinese fair. Considering a usual $50-$100 per person 'red-packet' for attending the wedding, its a sure bet the family lost no money in that party. A table of ten will net the family around $700...and i can tell u that 'feast' is more like a $500/perTable or much less.

U know many chinese will knock this wedding for providing this class of food...especially if they know the family is well-to-do. And they'll be pissed coz they'll accuse the family of trying to make money with this class of food. Again, no offence, just telling u how it is with chinese and this kinda stuff.
Other 'knowledgeable' chinese can chime in...

Loks like a typical Vietnamese(Asian) wedding reception.

Usually about 10-15 round tables with about 10 guests at each table.
A 5-8 course meal.
Some dancing and kaorake afterward.
Usually when you attend these receptions, you have to donate $50-100 in an envelop.

I love going to those, great way to meet women(seriously) The girls at the weeding are looking for husbands too.

dude, you need to stop threadcrapping with the foods from toronto. they are no where near the quality of food you can get in toronto. I am talking about the entire northeast region including nyc chinatown.

the good thing is I am two hours away from toronto. 😀

Yeah this man has been to a few Asian weddings like I have.
Thats not big bucks. The $50-100 donation usually makes up for it.
If that lady makes over $100K a year, shes being awefully frugal with the wedding.
Just the place alone, I can tell its not very expensive.

My brother wedding reception was more upscale than that and hes makes $80K and his wife doesn't work.

OH , wow the food looks :disgust: and why do you consider thsoes 2 girls as jailbait :/

Hehhe, i hope you had fun!

My guess is $150-$200 per table for that food. I've never been to a chinese banquet that served dim sum at dinner.

yes, for some reason canada has the best chinese food. I don't get it.

Its on par with china and without the hepatitis risk.

Quality of the seafood is much better in Canada. Plus lots of immigrants / 1st generation.

i love chinese weddings... mmmm the food...

EDIT: i just looked at the plates and those are quite possibly the cheeseiest looking plates ever. i equate those plates with those run down looking restaurants in chinatown in SF...

the food servings did look on the small side though. i guess i'm used to big old chinese weddings in the SF bay area and LA.

my cousin had his reception at one of those wannabe chinese restaurants that are americanized for the general public since it was in palo alto. the place was nice, the food wasn't. ambience was good though. i heard that was maybe 500 a table? can't remember the figure. only squeezed in 20 tables though, small for my big ass family and friends.

Well there are 3/4 of a million Chinese people in the greater Toronto area. So the demand is greater for quality and quantity here than any other city outside of Asia.

I have to agree with the other posters, the food doesn't look like it cost big bucks. It still look like you had fun though. Hey, as long and the bride and groom were happy with the results.

Wow, lots of comments from you Chinese snobs!

Look at it this way, I've never been to a wedding like this. so to me this is special.

I'm sure I can find a guy who's dad used to be a cook for the empress of Ching dynasty and tell you guys that your food in Toronto or whereever is crap because they used to serve tofu stuffed with precious pearls and steamed for 24 hours. Because there's a Chinese phrase that goes "demon's power is a unit, but a taoist's power is ten units" or something like that.

Now, what would be nice is that you guys should go to your special wedding and take pictures for us white folks to see what the difference is.

They did serve some sort of soup called bird's nest, but I didn't take any pictures. I believe the tables were $200 per. I had a good time that's the most important part. I didn't know I was suppose to give money in a little red pouch. We gave gifts.

And yeah, my friend, who is not the groom, does look like a bum. I guess I will not show him this thread. 😀

maybe the food was catered to the tastes of the guests? since the groom's half might not appreciate the fine delicacies that the others described.

OMG, I was thinking about the same thing. Our super chinese senses must have been tingling big time lol. yeah the food looked kinda average for seafood. The abalone looked hella small. Probably not even the fresh kind. And the biggest give away was the silverware. Come one! they use those dishes for 5 dollar entrees like chicken chow mein or general tso's chicken.

Oh btw, the asian guy gets the shaft on this one...another one bites the dust 🙁

i agree, toronto is like mini-china in some places. i remember driving down spadina north of the gardiner for the first time and was like... wtf?
