FWIW I got this drive and it made more coasters than any burner I've ever had, I returned it and got the Pioneer DVR-110 and haven't had one failed disc since.

NEC are good drives, but they really dont sing until you put on the hacked firmware. Im at work, i dont have the links but google up NEC firmware. load up these firmwares and the NEC media finickyness goes bye bye

Firmware made no difference.

Still coasters, I tried 4 different kinds brands of media also, it just really had issues.

But of course like with anything YMMV.

I too thought my liteon 1633s was experiencing issues. Tried the same fixes and nothing worked. I finally reimaged my machine and it started working without any problems. Did you try going that far? Or even try hooking it up to another machine? It's entirely possible that the drive itself is not bad but the windows install is. just my 2 cents

Sorry to keep this off topic, but is there any performance difference between using this as an external (USB 2.0) verses internal IDE?

$37.49 shipped for the 3540 now at Chiefvalue when you use a $5 off coupon code easily found on other forums.

Performance how? If it cant handle the burn speed you'll get buffer underruns. However as long as you do USB 2 that shouldn't happen, unlesss your computer has uber high CPU utilization for high speed usb2 because the motherboard uses a sucky usb chip.

Or do you mean read performance? Its possible it adds a little time to the seek times, but since cd drives are such high seek times anyway compared to hdd, I doubt its noticable.

2 cents:

I just installed this as my first DVD burner. Stuck on DVD Shrink and Nero 6.0.

I have it to burn region 0 dvds of ligit dvds from eastern europe.

Fast!
No coasters!

I can confirm personally:

Idiot proof.

I know this is great deal plus I don't even own a dvd burner. But they don't have beige? Only silver and black. I know, who cares! Grab some beige paint or now is the time to get a black case :) Thanks OP!!

Anyone really wanting a Beige version of the drive can get one here, but it's $41.99 with $4 shipping. I don't want a black drive myself, but due to the difference in price (black is currently $40.99 with free shipping) I'll probably get a black one then just give it a face-lift. :)

I have a CDRW that i did a similar facelift to, except it was beige to Black (thanks Sharpie pen)

If you look at the product page, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152047
There is a combo special right now, add a usb2 case (BLACK) for 24.99 bucks, a bit more (36.99) for a firewire/usb case

Now showing at 39.75 for me with free 3 day shipping.

Caveat: if you add one of the combo items, they screw you on the shipping. Adding the case put shipping at 5.99. (not terrible, but misleading as hell.)
