Yeah, I saw that only a few hours *after* I placed my order with monarch. And I live only 25 miles away from zipzoomfly(and used to work right next door. Our offices shared a wall.)

How does this compare to the Pioneer DVR-109?

I'd prefer NON-NEC fanboy reponses :)

Ive always had and used Pioneer burners and currently thave the 109 and 108..they burn everything I throw at it and have no regrets...Pioneer is my preference howvever my friend has the NEC and he has had no problems with it.

lol, so insteadd Rossman gets a response from a Pioneer fanboy :p.

Ross - Get either one, you will be happy with the NEC or the Pioneer.

Actually I already bought the Pioneer DVR-109 but later discovered it's a little picky on the media. I just might buy both for the hell of it :)
i see, you just want to compare apple and banana for the hell of it?!@#ASDF

The NEC 3540 is a great drive.

I've been using the NEC 3520 for half a year. And with my new machine, I got the 3540 - these drives are really quite bulletproof, and I haven't even gotten a bad CD or DVD out of them.

Not too noisy either, compared to the likes of LiteOn for example.

Describe "Not too Noisy"? I bought this it is kinda noisy. I have an old CD drive that came with my dell, and it is relatively quiet. Kind of disappointed. Strange this is, my other CD-RW drive is kinda noisy too. Maybe CD/DVD burners are noisy.

thanks for the heads-up OP. I was about to buy the Pioneer for $51.

Am I the only one who wishes Pioneer still made slot-loaders? I've had one for 6 years and its been pretty good to me, and not having to deal with a tray is convenient.

too bad, cancel it?

they've already charged for it, but I shot them an email. we'll see? I think I'm SOL, but oh well, still less than 50 for a quality drive.

Funny, my slot-loading Pioneer dvd-rom is the only component I've kept bringing over into new systems since I bought it about 4-5 years ago (I think it was around 90 bucks). I even went throught the trouble of painting the face black so it matches my new system.

I'm equally mystified why slot loaders are no longer around. I'd gladly pay 20-30 dollars extra for that smooth slot loading feeling you now aparently can only get from a Mac.

That freakin burns me up. I literally had it in my cart at 41.99 and was shopping for other items (took about an hour while I was reading reviews, etc.) . Once I checked out, I noticed that the price had jumped up to $46.99 while it was still in my cart!

I've sent an email to Newegg requesting either a refund of the $5 or the cancellation of my entire order ($180 worth of equipment). It may seem petty to quibble over $5, but I think that's an extremely deceptive business tactic to raise the price of an item in a customer's cart (I can see if it's a cart that you've had stored for a day or so, but an HOUR???). I used to use Newegg for my purchasing, but if they won't honor their own price, I guess I'll have to find a better site.

***Here's the resolution***

Here's a snippet of the response.

We apologize for the inconvenience this might has caused you.

All prices are per the website and are final at checkout. However if an items' price changes while the item is in the shopping cart an exception can be made, as long as we are able to verify that the price did change within those few minutes. Due to this inconvenience, I have offer you a credit in amount of $5 to your MasterCard. Please allow your card issuer 3-5 business days to process it and make the fund become available.

While I'm glad they'll refund me the $5, anyone else think it's funny that their "From" name looks like it spells "whine"? Extreme coincidence, or subtle message from their network admins, I wonder. Makes me think of the ID-10-T error that can happen with certain people. Oh well, deal is back to being warm as of now.
