Had an unnaounced visit from a cambrigde inspector today, so I got examinated while having my students taking their exam...

because some profs like to give exams in which the averages are 40%. Obviously this isn't because the students don't deserve to pass, it's because the prof is an asshat. So to make the majority of students pass, the prof curves the grade up to something tolerable like 65%

I have a friend who teaches - and his explanation for this is so the truly exceptional students can stand out, even though he curves. If the average grade is 85, and 15% of the class scores over 95, you can't identify the superstars.

But if the average grade is 40%, and only one person gets over 90%, you know who the standout is. Yes, they might give an A for any score over 75%, but the guy who got the 90% is going to get extra attention - possible TA work, entry into a competitive master's program, referred to the teacher's contacts for jobs, etc.

I was told that if time is running out taking a test and it's multiple choice, just pick a letter and bubble in the same one for every question. It's better than not bubbling in anything.

Not if incorrect answers lose 1 1/3 points, and blank answers lose 1 point.
