Yay!

I get to meet with my boss and human resource administrator to discuss why my morale is so low. Oh boy oh boy oh boy! 3 years of anger and frustration are going to be unleashed this afternoon.

It could get messy :Q

Keep repeating "Iowa" under your breath in low tones and keep a glassy eyed look. You will be OK.

hehe man
i heard one of my colleagues go to the guy in the next cubicle and tell him that the big boss man asked my colleague whether the guy next to me is running a business from work. I could just "hear"! the shock in the guys voice when he was asked. And I do think he is because he's always on the phone and he talks so loud its hard not to hear what he's saying
hence the reason i bought my slimx 🙂

H.R. is useless - U-S-E-L-E-S-S!!!**. Be careful about what you say - things can (and will) come back to haunt you. Best of luck!!

** - After receiving a severance package from my previous employer, I wrote a note to my old manager telling him what was wrong with the group - and why morale was so bad in his group. I copied his three managers on the note along with the CEO of the company. :Q - Yes, I have balls - and I tried to tell them the same thing in person (I'm not one to hide behind an E-mail program and type nasty notes.) You should have seen the generic B.S. response letter that I received a few weeks ago from the H.R. manager. The letter was so useless, I can't believe they wasted the time to print it out and mail it to me. My rantings were all done very, very diplomatically and professionally, too. I guess companies are not looking for free advice anymore. Their loss. 🙁

You didn't get a personal response back from Lee himself? Crud...

Eh, i could write a graduate school thesis on why my morale is so low, but I'll just touch on the major points.

- I haven't seen a pay raise in over 2.5 years yet my workload has trippled.
- I've had more 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 hour days than I care remember...and I get no pat on the back or good job or thanks for you dedication
- I'm the single IT guy responsible for a corporate office and 25 remote locations in the states of Iowa, SD, ND, Nebraska, and Wisconison and frequently have to travel to those locations unexpectedly(reason for my long days), yet my office is harping on me to have a "concrete" schedule.
- Never mind the fact that I've been in the office before 9:00 AM for the last three months baring a buisness trip or a previously scheduled vacation/personal day
- My coworkers wait until the last fscking minute to do something before a deadline and if something crashes/breaks/doesn't work and they can't meet the deadline it's MY fault
- My employers want "better communication" from me, yet they consistently involve me at the last minute in things I should have been involved in from the beginning so I bust my ass and put in double time days and don't get a single compliment from it
- I'm the only person in my office that has to travel on a whim and they can't get it through their heads that I'm a single person supporting a very large area and I can't possibly be expected to fix something in Wisconsin when I'm over in Nebraska
- Basically, i'm an appliance for the company. I'm the only person in the company to have my birthday forgotten(Birthdays are big deals at my company)....two years in a row.

Basically a whiny bitch list. Nothing more. I'm just sick of being expected to do things that I can't possibly do.

"Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime. So where's the motivation?"

No. But, I'll post a scan of the silly letter in a few minutes so everyone can see how worthless it was.

And this is different from any other IT guy how?

Please keep in mind, we have to be motivated by more than money. In the past, I received plenty of money. However, it was more than the money that made me want to get up in the morning, arrive at the office by 7:00 A.M. and love the work that I did. This was fine and dandy up until a year and a half ago. I then had the opportunity to get a supervisor who wasn't in tune with any of the people and the department's morale went into the crapper. Having good peers, challenging work, a bit of fun and knowing what you are producing has some value to someone is much more imporatant than money.

It's not really. But my company hasn't had a position like this before (I was a new hire for a new type of position), all the other positions are accountants. My company can't seem to figure out that the general scheduled day to day routines of accountants don't apply to an IT guy responsible for supporting a couple hundred devices in 5 different states.

While it is true, most shops run in this manner - all don't or don't need to. It's all about communication. If they changed 80% of their bad behavior practices, vi_edit would probably overlook the fact that he didn't ge a raise in the past 2.5 years. Some areas that need to be changed:

1) Communication on big projects, plans, etc. needs to be made early on. You can't go to someone in the 11th hour and expect miracles. The idea of "Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine" comes to mind.

2) Pats on the back. People (read: supervisors and managers) always keep their emotions locked down too tight. If they'd loosen up a bit, make the rounds more often and tell people that they were going a "great job" would ease a lot of the tension. This is more valuable than money itself. Plus, when a worker hears these kinds of comments, they push themselves harder to do a better job because they feel APPRECIATED! Managers who sit in their offices all day to write E-mail notes, surf pr0n and have little interaction with the staff members are clueless about managing people. Managers like this should all be fired!!
