Don't know anything about Freebsd except for a few rumblings I've heard from a friend or two but figure that just about any OS is reasonably easy to install.. lol, it's the configuring and maintance that can be the PITA,imho anyway 🙂

Both the installation and maintenance of FreeBSD is quite easy. Only thing that is lacking tends to be hardware support for the latest hardware, but that is getting better too. Configuring the different applications is done by means of configuration scripts, which are usually reasonably clear, and are very well documented on the FreeBSD site. What you can do is to select FTP as source for the OS and packages during installation, then it will retrieve the latest versions from the Internet automatically, instead of having to search for each package yourself.

Hey,thanks for the link ! once I finish exam 70-215 I might play around with this for a bit of fun 🙂

If you are a masochist:

3.5. I have only 4 MB of RAM. Can I install FreeBSD?

FreeBSD 2.1.7 was the last version of FreeBSD that could be installed on a 4MB system. FreeBSD 2.2 and later needs at least 5MB to install on a new system.

All versions of FreeBSD will run in 4MB of RAM, they just cannot run the installation program in 4MB. You can add extra memory for the install process, if you like, and then after the system is up and running, go back to 4MB. Or you could swap your disk into a system which has >4MB, install onto the disk and then swap it back.

FreeBSD 2.1.7 will not install with 640 kB base + 3 MB extended memory. If your motherboard can remap some of the ``lost'' memory out of the 640kB to 1MB region, then you may still be able to get FreeBSD 2.1.7 up. Try to go into your BIOS setup and look for a ``remap'' option. Enable it. You may also have to disable ROM shadowing. It may be easier to get 4 more MB just for the install. Build a custom kernel with only the options you need and then remove the 4MB out. You can also install 2.0.5 and then upgrade your system to 2.1.7 with the ``upgrade'' option of the 2.1.7 installation program.

After the installation, if you build a custom kernel, it will run in 4 MB. Someone has even successfully booted with 2 MB, although the system was almost unusable.

😀 😀 😉

It can be quite fun to play with indeed, although I probably wouldn't turn down booty calls for it 😉

Only on ATOT does a post about a missed booty call morph into a full blown discussion of how much RAM a FreeBSD install runs in....

baffled2 - It was sooo easy to install it's not funny 🙂 I installed Qmail byt following Life with Qmail, then I installed courier-imap port on its own. Configured everything so I had a fully functional IMAP/SMTP server going. Then with the command (cd /usr/ports/mail/squirrelmail && make && make install && make clean) I got apache, mod_php4, and squirellmail all installed 🙂 (I love FreeBSD). A couple changes in httpd.conf, and php.ini and everything is a go! And FreeBSD is not Linux! PM if you want some help installing FreeBSD! I'll gladly help a girl out 😉

Rendus - Hehe, FreeBSD don't tell people how easy it is, people won't be impressed then 😉

Valhalla1 - The pic is on the first page... I will add it to the first post too...

littlegohan - I would say it is borderline abuse... The only server that is really publicly available is the mailserver which doesn't use much bandwidth right now. I have an ftp server which I stream music to work... that is the majority of my bandwidth usage... I use Ashampoo and stream my mp3s over ftp and doing that for 8 hours a day is a lot of uploading... But since it is for personal use is that ok? I would gladly pay more if the started a tiers system... I would probably be willing to pay $100/month for a static IP and a larger upload limit (only paying $35cdn/month right now! I love Vancouvers cheap broadband)

Astaroth33 - I sort of like the way this thread is going 😛

Yes, that pink is pretty gay!

btw, I also sent myself/you/everyone an email back to the inbox letting you know how gay it is. 😛

You sir, are quite mistaken!

But just cause the chick is a dog (and she is) doesnt mean the sex would be bad. 😉

If it makes you feel better I used to blow off a few girlfriends that I had when EQ
first came out. Heh, it was pretty funny telling them I had to study.
Oh how somedays I really miss the evercrack.

yeah, I too live in vancouver, and shaw has deleted my friend's account for abusing the service
I really think you should reduce your bandwith usage
I mean most ppl upload 1-2 gig max, dont u think uploading 30gb a month is exploiting the service?

oh , and i didnt know vancouver has slut

now i know😀

littlegohan - 30G, woops I meant 15G... about half a gig a day when I am at work... Still way over the limit though... If they stopped my connection I would not complain... the fact that they are not doing anything about it is actually disturbing!
