well my machine killed another power supply, how often do you overclockers go through PSUs?

The PSU is the one component that can kill every other part in your computer. All at once. I've never understood why it's the first place some people pick to "economize".

edit: FWIW, I've gone from generic (during my young and ignorant days) to Antec, then Enermax, and now SeaSonic. I've not had one fail since I started buying by brand.

It doesn't even save that much. If you go completely dirt cheap, you might spend $50. You can get a nice higher end Antec 850 for under $150.

I had a SFF case that came with a PSU included. Started acting flaky not too long afterwards and I got rid of it before it could do any damage.

I dont overclock and I only buy quality Power Supplies. Have never burnt one out.

My problem is simply not having enough power or not having the proper connectors when I upgrade motherboard or video card.

I usually get the extened warranty from Newegg but so far I have never needed it.

Dat's wat happenz wen u tryin' 2 toon ur whip wid doze cline dikes and u snip 2 much medal off teh top! Now ur swrz are toppin' tree N ur sweet-16'z finalz r bussin' ur 'lectric systemz up reel good - nowatimsayin'? Nice 148GTLDX tho - can tellz by da roger beepz. Werd.

0 for me. dont buy crappy PSU's intentionally, and if machines end up with them, they get replaced soon.

lol @ overclocked pentium d.
seriously that things sucking down the juice, you were better off buying a new cpu long ago, even a low end duo core would slam the pentium d.

i think it might just be the crappy power supplys i've been using, (Codegen 550 watters) the specs are decent, had a pretty strong 5v rail (30A) but a weak 12V rail (16A)

through my trusty Antec truepower 420 in there and it's back up and running, i think it's underrated at 420 watts, i didn't look at the specs on it before i closed the case back up, but it's served me for many years and in many different machines, its been powering my fileserver/ftp server so now i need to find another power supply to power it, im sure i have one laying around somewhere, and the server isn't very demanding... i might have to lower the overclock but that's ok, it just needs to serve files and that doesnt take much cpu power at all...

so how many crappy psu's have you guys killed with your overclocked machines?

Crappy Power Supply.....bottom line!!

err well, modern cpu uses very little power. very little stress on even a marginal psu. he had a 3.8ghz pentium d..two pentium 4's going crazy mad clubbing to death poor weedy psu's.

Do you guys in the US get all the crap that does not even pass inspection in china?
I've never had any "cheap PSU that came with the case" fail on me, on several different comps (and one was a power hungry P4 with a 300w PSU).
Currently running a 8400 with a 4850 - not too demanding, working fine for over 6 months on a 350w PSU.
