Just thought I'd share a few tips with you guys in the same boat. Since I've matured (finished puberty that is, Im 24 now), my lowest weight has been 190... and that was about 4 years ago. I'm only 5'9, but 190 on me was skinny...I'm a pretty thick guy. At 190 I didn't have any love handles or gut :). Fast forward to About december of 2001...I got up to 255...now this was bad!, so I got my act together. I'm at 225 right now.

Basically it comes down to this...

I cut down my portions to a normal human level, heh... and my "big" meals of the day are around noon-2pm... In the evenings I go for walks, about an hour each time, 4 times a week. I don't eat at least 5 hours before I go to bed, and if I do get hungry in the evening, I have a little cup of cereal or I go pick up one of those cheapy lean cuisine meals. Don't get me wrong, I still eat fast food, but found some simple ways to not gorge myself.

Aside from only eating those nasty meals for lunch I also:

-dont "big" size anything
-get burgers without mayo (you'd be surprised how many calories that stuff has)
-get diet soda

Regardless, my goal is to get make it to 200. At that weight, I wear a size 38 pant and I don't feel too scrawny. Part of the massive weight gain was that I used to weight lift a lot, then I met a girl and she sort of took all of my time... evedently when you stop weight lifting , yours muscles shrink pretty quick and fat easily replaces it, who'da thunk? ;)

anyways, wish me luck, I'm off for a walk :)

thats pretty good. Ive dropped 7 pounds since ive been at college...drink water, not pop.

Hey, good work, and walking is one of the best all-around exercises for health not just weight loss.

I dropped about 40 pounds as an undergrad just by walking the 1.5 miles each way to and from the university. I've gained it back though after a decade of being a 9-to-5 coder, so I guess it's time to emulate you and Jared and get back into the walking :)

Good for you. I'm also loosing weight. I'm looking to join the Army and have to lose a few pounds to qualify. This past week alone i've lost 10 pounds. My recruiters have me on a "Run till you die"(tm) workout program. Basicly in the morning, i put on a garbage under my shirt (sometimes sweat shirt) and jog/walk about 5/6 miles.

I did kinda get carried away doing too much too soon and got a case of runners knee so unfortunatly i haven't been doing it the past couple days, but i hope to get started again next week. This time though i'm gonna start off with less distance and work my way up. It sucks after running 2 weeks then having to stop all of a sudden, you really do addicted to it.

good for you! It's hard to get into the mind set to lose the weight but when you do...no one can stop you! A few yrs. back I'd gained a lot of weight. 5'4.5" and 176lbs. Not good! But I lost 60 pounds and I've managed to keep it off for 6 yrs. Minus my pregnancy but I've been having no problem losing the baby weight, cause my head is still into my healthy active lifestyle! In fact as of today I fit into a pair of my pre-pregnancey pants! I had my baby 6 months ago. still got a bit to go but I'll get there!

Sorry it's not about me! It's about you... Way to go I'm proud of you!!!

Congrats. I lost 40 lbs since May.
Same thing. I am a thick guy 6ft tall. I got to 275 lbs, mostly cus I am computer engineer, and sit in front of my workstation all day, and my home PC all night.
Basically what I did is I started biking to work every day, biking home for lunch too, and back to work and back home, for about 20 miles a day.
I also started going to the gym. I stopped eating out, because it's impossible to control calorie intake that way. I stopped buying calorie rich snacks. I filled my fridge with fruits and veggies to snack on when I am hungry. I eat mostly chicken and fish with no fat during cooking, and a little rice/potatoes/pasta on side and salads. I didn't cut out carbs, but I basically burned 4500 calories a day and ate 2500 until I got down to about 240 lbs. I lost about a lb every 2 or 3 days That took about 4 months. Now I cut down cardio at the gym, and just do weights there and biking for cardio. I am aiming for about 200-220 lbs based on my frame. I am about 235 now, and losing maybe a lb a week or so. I am going to try to slowly ease into my goal weight and then keep it there, and also I am building up muscle.

Good job dude.

Oh, and just to let you know. YOu don't have to worry about eating right before you go to bed. That is a myth.

Keep up the good work.

wow, glad to see everyone out there is trying :)

thats another thing I forgot, I don't snack anymore... you don't htink snacking gets you, but it does! :) At home, we don;t have any sodas, but I or my mom make some iced tea that is lightly sweetened. :)

There was a study done that said most americans overeat because they dont drink enough water. If you have eaten a meal, and feel hungry a few hours later, try drinking some water... most of the time, your hunger goes away for several hours :) The salty diet of americans leaves a most of us unknowingly thirsty :)

good luck to all of you ! :)

I'm 6'2 at 215 and feel like a fat ass!! I was 180 for the LONGEST time :Q, yeah that's beyond skinny for my size. The one key factor in me gaining any weight at all was the fact that my 3 to 9 mile a day running addiction fubar'ed my knee's, as of now they hurt 24/7 . I only ran so much because of highschool sports, and the fact that running miles took about 6 to 7 minutes for me on average, it took a lot of exercise to wear me out. At this point I can do NO exercise WHATSOEVER, and let me tell you, no exercise is the single best way to stay overweight, so keep up the walks for sure. Size 36 is pretty baggy on me with my extra weight and 38 is just out of the question so you MUST be naturally stalky if you look alright, but since you say you want to get to 200 I guess you still have a bit to loose. I have a pretty bad grasp on the look of weight on a person because I've been tall and on the smaller side for so long so i cant really picture you. I want to loose 15 pounds myself, loosing weight without physical activity has been a nightmare :(. All in all you've done a great job man, loosing weight is 10% phisical and 90% mental and that says alot for you. Keep going!!

Congratulations..as an interesting note...I am healthier than I have ever been....and this is my first year at university, it may sound odd..but all the walking has gotten me in great shape and the fact that I started working out again just before I got here and have continued to do so...
I am about 5'9"-5'10" and I have been unable to weight myself but feel as thought i am around 165 at the moment...which is good for me.
I although am working in the opposite direction of you most as I am trying to gain about 10 more pounds. Why you ask?..well because 165 is skinny on me...I am naturally a thicker guy...(where it counts, chest)..
I don't know what it is but when i sit around i usually lose weight and don't put on much fat...I guess i'm lucky like that...but whatever muscle I had built up working out previously turned into fat...but coming here..i have burnt it all off and am gaining true muscle mass again, boy am I happy.

one thing I have noticed is that my abs are much stronger than many of my work out partners/friends who seem to die after 1 burnout session of abs...where I revel on getting more...I suppose those 300-400 sit ups a night as a younger guy actually helped me out...all in all though, it's great to hear of someone else finding satisfaction in being healthy, I commend you, I love it :)...

anyhow, there is my rant..

(p.s., another reason for the work ethic of mine is because of a bet i have going with a friend back home that said i would be fat and lazy when I came back...and I said I would be way bigger..:D...well i'm winning and haven't lost a bet in my life and don't intend to ;))

Congrats, sounds like me. I went on a diet after Coaching in the year end hockey tournament in April. I have lost 29 lbs since then. I have taken off 3" on my waist and at my teams first practice last Saturday the parenrts who did not see me all summer asked if I was sick. One asked if I had Cancer. WTF,,,,,,I go from feeling good about what I did and myself, to bewilderment.

BTW, I gave up candy, chips, soda, and have cut my meals down in size. I also don't eat any fast food of any type.

Good luck and good work. :)

Congrats :)

I've lost 50lbs since January myself. I had decided to take the summer off since I go out much more for dinner and drinks during that time of the year. I did manage not to gain weight during that time :)

I basically cut out everything that had empty calories...soda, fast food etc. Still drink my beer though...lite beer now :)
I also replaced red meat with more chicken and fish. Drinking lots of water helps too. As a matter of fact that is the easiest way to loose the weight. Every 3500 calories you eat equals roughly one pound. If you replace a can of sonda a day with water you can easily loose a couple pounds every two weeks and build on it from there.

Congrats!

That's pretty amazing how making small changes in your lifestyle (especially diet) has such a significant impact on your weight and health.

I lost 45 pounds since the beginning of August. I'm 6'2 and I weighed 270. 7 years ago when I got out of high school I weighed 224. During 4 years of college I was on the one meal a day plan. I never ate breakfast and I never ate lunch. I made up for the entire day at supper. When I graduated from college I weighed around 145. When I went to law school I started eating lunch every day and by my last year I had reached 270. I decided that after I took the bar exam this summer I would lose some weight mainly because I was starting to worry about health problems. My blood pressure was high and the doctor said my thyroid was too large (messed up metabolsim). I started eating 3 smaller meals a day and I started to exercise. I got a bike and I ride for about 20 minutes to an hour every day. Not only do I eat 3 smaller meals a day, but I also eat healthy foods - fish, chicken, salad etc. At 225, I feel much better and have much more energy. My goal is 200. Once I got started, losing weight is not too hard. Good luck to everyone else.
