Ugh, not looking good for my 6800GT. I was hoping to play at 1280x960 at least with 2xAA.

You could probably gain playability at that setting by turning down the game settings from "max" to something more moderate.

This doesn't look much better than the demo. I have a 6800 GT too and it looks like I'll still be stuck at 800x600 with some options turned down to get 60fps minimums. I might just hold off buying this game until I get a better card.

Yeah, FEAR is a crazy performance hog. Here's my results (FEAR retail version):
This is with my X850XT PE @ 600/1200 with soft shadows off

1680X1050 (set in settings.cfg)
noAA, 8X AF

FPS:
min: 23
avg: 35
max: 67

1280X960

FPS:

min: 30
avg: 48
max: 90

It performs a bit better than the demo - seems smoother. Although 1680X1050 (which I run it at) is a bit of a stretch...

You can't enjoy a game unless it has a minimum of 60fps? Thats pretty high for a minimum. Are you overly sensitive to framerates?

You have almost the exact same setup as I do so i guess I know where mine should perform. Looks like we'll need the next gen cards (or mega bucks for SLI) to play this game at higher resolutions.

I hoped it would run faster on the retail version. Hopefully future driver updates will give us some extra performance.

I can't tell the difference between 25 and 60 as long as it's constant...

are your benchmarks with soft shadows on? I know enabling soft shadows means taking a big hit in performance, thats why I want to know how it runs with that setting off.

I sure as hell am. If everything keeps moving this fast I'll end up being a console user.

i find the softshadows dont look that great anyway, for example in bf2 the dynamic shadows and ****** are ugly so i just turn them off and enjoy the extra fps so much more worth it.

No, most likely the stuttering is caused by only having 1GB of RAM. It sucks, I know...

Soft shadows does have a HUGE performance hit for me (well, somewhere in the order of 25%). Maybe it's a bit less for you on an Nvidia card (they do stencil shadows very well; I'm not sure what types of shadows FEAR uses).

What kind of performance boost do you get by turning soft shadows off?

I forget what score i got from the benchmark test, but i am running it @ 1280x960 with all settings maxed with Ax AA, & my X850XT PE seems to be happy.

I don't know how people can tolerate anything less to be honest. I find that smooth motion is an eye candy of its own and it really gets irritating when the jerkiness starts to appear. I always turn down settings until I can get a minimum of around 60, although this applies mainly to FPS games. It's possible to get that in the FEAR demo but I have to turn down a lot of options including the resolution. Some people are saying that this game might be unusually CPU dependent and a faster processor may speed things up a lot, but I have yet to see this confirmed anywhere.

I doubt this game is going to sell very well, given that it seems to require a 6800GT/X800XL or equivalent card to pull even half decent fps.

Yes, there are some widescreen modes that are supported right out of the box, 1400x1050 being one of them. But you can enable other modes like 1920x1200 through the config file (c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\monolith\fear\settings.cfg)

1920x1200 on my iXPS2 is sweet looking, but man does it choke in combat. That's the biggest disappointment for me.
