Welfare recipients take out cash at strip clubs, liquor stores

They’re on the dole — and watching the pole.
Welfare recipients took out cash at bars, liquor stores, X-rated video shops, hookah parlors and even strip clubs — where they presumably spent their taxpayer money on lap dances rather than diapers, a Post investigation found.
A database of 200 million Electronic Benefit Transfer records from January 2011 to July 2012, obtained by The Post through a Freedom of Information request, showed welfare recipients using their EBT cards to make dozens of cash withdrawals at ATMs inside Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn; the Blue Door Video porn shop in the East Village; The Anchor, a sleek SoHo lounge; the Patriot Saloon in TriBeCa; and Drinks Galore, a liquor distributor in The Bronx.
The state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), which oversees the “cash assistance program,” even lists some of these welfare-ready ATMs on its Web site.
One EBT machine is stationed inside Club Eleven, an infamous Hunts Point jiggle joint known as much for its violent history as its girls in pink thongs.
Cops have been cracking down on the Bronx club since 2009 and shut it down temporarily in 2010. In July, five men were stabbed and two others shot outside after bouncers broke up a 4 a.m. brawl with pepper spray. The club appeared to be shuttered when The Post visited Thursday.
Club Heat, another Bronx strip club that dispenses EBT cash, is also no stranger to violence. A 33-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head outside the club in December 2011.
Critics blasted the government for turning a blind eye to welfare’s sleazy money.
So welfare recipients are now wasting the money on strip clubs, liquor and porn. I did not know that these were critical necessities

Where is the oversight on how the welfare money is spent? Do those idiot government bureaucrats just give them the money and let them spend it on whatever they want?

Clearly these people should NOT be getting and welfare money and should be taken off along with having to pay back the money

These people need to be kicked off welfare and there needs to be much more cuts to the welfare programs in order to prevent abuse and waste of tax dollars like this

Do you agree that they should be kicked off and there needs to be major cuts to welfare?

I agree they (those committing fraud) should be restricted from EBT card/cash use. Give them food stamps only. No I do not think welfare should be cut. Fraud should be thoroughly investigated though.

For someone who claims not to be republican, you sure use Fox News almost every time. ;)

Yes there should be a large government department that tracks people's movements and spending habits. These people need to be under close monitoring 24/7.

While they are at it they should check for immoral or antigovermental activities in the rest of the population as well.

Its the typical crapola argument used to discredit people on welfare. Because if one per4son abuses the welfare system, all of them are is the inconsolable argument.

To start out, In most states its illegal to cash welfare checks at casino's or use welfare money to buy booze or similar products.

What about Defense Dept .abuse by contractors grossly over-charging for goods and services.

Some people will abuse any system there is. Politicians do it, Corps do it, welfare people do it, hell many otherwise law-abiding people "exaggerate" on their tax forms all the time.

But they didnt show the amount. Nor the distribution if alot bought a beer and 2 people went to a stripclub.

Such information serves no purpose without more information. Besides making up assumptions about other people.

The US welfare system sure needs a much needed reform, but this is simply a witchhunt.

Hmmmm, clearly the government needs to monitor all financial and business dealings as well.

OP we are going to need a bigger budget to pay for this bigger government you want.

Exactly - Dozens out of 200 million. Even if they find 50 instances......that only 0.00000025%.

Yes. Welfare can be an almost limitless free ride. Members of my own family are proud of the fact that they found a way to get on the government handout gravy train so they never have to work a day of their life.

I feel the government should offer some sort of assistance to individuals and families but it should always be temporary and aimed at enabling them to help themselves, not shackling them to handouts.

Look on the other side of the pond to see how its done.

Government support should be for as long time as it is needed. But you need to keep those unemployed activated with job plans and possible reeducation for better skills. Also if the jobcenter finds you a job you are qualified for, and you reject it. Then your welfare is removed as well.

Remember the economy needs atleast 3-4% unemployed for the wages not to overheat.

GSA/ DoD authorize the costs in many of the publicized cases. Expediency or sole source is the justification. When there is only on company than has the ability to ramp up support for a project, the buyer is at their mercy.

Just because a small percentage of them are abusing it doesn't make it bad. How is this obama fail?

It is much more than a "small percentage" There is massive abuse of this.

The pos obama supports welfare since his ideology is flawed and it makes people more dependent on the government, hence more votes

So how should the government monitor the population better then?

"It is much more than a 'small percentage'".

You keep using that phrase.
I do not think it means what you think it means.

No, A much better idea is to stop wasting money on this nonsense which serves to gather votes and produce more class warfare. End welfare which is the only real solution

Yeah ending welfare would totally bring an end to class warfare.

The EBT cards need to be coded such that they are not available for ATM use and also limited to type of goods purchased.
