Welcome Nancy. We saved a seat for you.

Wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth if she joined little Ron? 🙂

SPEAK NOT: GOP officials don't seem too bothered by the fact that presidential son Ron Reagan will address the Democratic convention tonight. They're clearly more troubled, however, by the fact that Reagan's mother, Nancy, apparently won't be speaking at theirs. It's no secret that Mrs. Reagan is dismayed by George W. Bush's restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, which holds enormous promise for future disease cures. Researchers admit the near-term potential of stem cells for Alzheimer's patients like Ronald Reagan is quite limited, but Mrs. Reagan doesn't seem to care: "I do not expect her at our convention," Republican chairman Ed Gillespie admitted in a press briefing here this morning.

But Gillespie wasn't content to leave reporters with the impression that Mrs. Reagan was boycotting the convention over stem cells. Instead, he cast her as a traumatized old widow. "Let's be a little thoughtful here," the GOP chairman lectured inquisitive reporters. "Mrs. Reagan's been through a lot this year. And whether she determines she wants to come to our convention this year is Mrs. Reagan's decision, and no one else's. ... Just keep in mind for a moment the year Mrs. Reagan has had, and be understanding."

Nancy Reagan is undoubtedly drained and in mourning. But that wasn't enough to keep her from speaking last month at the public christening of an aircraft carrier named after her husband. Sure, a national convention is a much bigger ordeal than a ceremony naming an aircraft carrier. But I have a feeling that's not what's going on here--and that Gillespie knows it.

I don't know much about Ron Reagan's political views, but I find it odd that he is slated to speak at the DNC tonight. Anyone care to enlighten me?

According to an interview I heard. He was asked to speak on stem cell research and that is what he will do. He said he wouldn't talk about anything else.

He is an admitted Liberal who stands for little of what his Father did. It's fine with me if he talks to the Dems but I don't think it'll get them anywhere.

Stem cell research. Harvesting human lives for research could save others from Alzheimers and countless other diseases. Also, cloning humans to be slaves or soldiers would save more lives. Oops...did I open a can of moral ambiguities?

He's been a liberal for a very long time. Same with Patti Davis.

However, the issue he is addressing will be stem cell research which may have promise as a cure or treatment for parkinson's disease which killed former Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Rumors persist that Nancy is in favor of stem cell research, even though President Reagan was against it up to his death.

Poor woman has been through enough.

I wish that Ron Reagan had the opportunity to speak at the RNC instead of the DNC.
Stem cell research is critical in the advancement of medicine in our time.
The only reason my party (Republican) opposes it is that they think it will encourage people to have more abortions. This is my largest problem with the right wing of my party these days.

I will indicate my pro-choice - AND - pro life stance on abortion at a later date.
But clearly the extremists are standing in the way of any reasonable solution to the issue.

No but you demonstrated your lack of understanding of these matters. I'm sure the answers are in the Bible somewhere, go back to reading that.

Are you some kind of idiot? Where on earth do you get this idea that we will be cloning humans and sacrificing them for sake of research? Medical advances are going to continue regardless of what hardcore Christian conservatives have to say about it.

Alzheimers, actually.

He and his sister Patty were liberal even during their father's presidency, and opposed most of his policies at the time.

This is why I find it quite funny that the press is acting surprised with the way he is acting now. I guess they figure most Americans have very short memories and/or are too young to know better.

I don't know what you have against me. Why you persist in calling me an idiot while evincing your ignorance is a mystery.

Ah well, I'll play teacher again for you.

Many scientists are keen to extract embryonic stem cells in a cloning procedure similar to the one that produced Dolly the sheep.

They believe the use of cells harvested from embryos offers the greatest potential to treat degenerative diseases - more so than for stem cells taken from adults which they argue are less easy to handle and control.

Who has a lack of understanding? Nobody, including President Bush or any Christian nut cares if we perform research on stem cells from umbilical cord or adults. In fact, President Bush said to go ahead and use the ones we already have. Nobody is against the research...just one proposed means for acquiring stem cells.

The moral ambiguities are when scientist begin fertilizing eggs to harvest the stem cells from the embryos.

.

Are you uninformed or making things up? Reagan had -and died of- alzheimer's. With a disease where you can't remember much, its kind of hard to have a stance on an issue up until your death. He didn't know of anything that had happened in probably the last 6 or so years. He still thought Clinton was president until the end.

He corrected his mistake.

In that case, kudos to him for holding out as long as he did. 😀

Is this some kind of joke? Nancy Reagan has been a vocal proponent of stem cell research, so no rumors are necessary. As for President Reagan, he was completely incapacitated by Alzheimer's years before stem cell research existed in the public eye, and I can't imagine he was together enough to come close to understanding what stem cell research was, much less have an opinion on it.

"Admitted liberal", "open with his liberalness", LOL, look at the two red faced partisans flirting with each other.
