Weird modem problem...

I just installed a 56k modem into another computer and I'm having a weird problem with it. I can connect to the internet fine the first time, but after I disconnect and want to connect again later it says "Cannot find modem. Connection to modem failed, check that it is installed properly." something sorta like that, so I restart, try to connect again and it works fine.

Here is some info:
3Com USR FaxModem 56k v.90
PCI Winmodem w/Voice (Model #: 3594A)
Windows 95 on that computer - I know it's old, but it's all it can handle

I'm clueless... any ideas?

EDIT: What's also weird is that when I first installed the modem I could reconnect as many times as I wanted with no problems, but then when I rebooted the machine and tried to connect more than once it wouldn't work.
 
What is your ISP?

Those Winmodems are known to have problems. Especially in a slower computer.

Try uninstalling all drivers for it, remove the card, download latest drivers for the modem (on another comp) install the card and install the latest downloaded drivers.
 
Well, I would try it on a very similar computer. If you try it on a different computer and it works, it shows that the modem will not cooperate with the computer you're trying to use it with. If you get the same problem, then you know it's the modem.
 
Okay, I'll see what I can do.... what if it's the computer, then what? I'm guessing that it is.

I'm also getting a few BSOD's in some VXD file.. frusterating.
 
do you now the name of the vxd file? It could be related to the modem problem, it's hard to tell sometimes.

If you have the time/leisure; when you have a VXD problem in Win95 you should probably do a clean install...

If it is the computer, then do a clean install and see if it works... make sure you backup anything important first.
 
Yeah, I'm thinking about that too, but I had just formatted it a week ago and it's only been touched once since then, but I had A LOT of problems with the modem install (getting the software to run correctly with the modem and so), so some havoc from that might have messed something else up. I had installed a bunch of different versions of the driver until I finally got it working.

I think I'll try that tomorrow, then if there is not much else I can do.
 
Well, I just formatted and did everything over and IT STILL DOESN'T WORK! 🙁 I still get the same 'ole problem.. grrah.

I haven't tried it into another computer yet, but I will probably a little later.

Any ideas?
 
No, it will say "Dialing..." wait a few seconds and then say cannot find the modem, make sure it is installed correctly, blah blah.

It never freezes though..
 
Seems to have to do something with modem (obvisously) by the name of the vxd... so there's some problem with the modem and the rest of your hardware... It COULD be as simple as your ram. What's the system specs?

Hmm, I don't know what else you'd need to know..

I'm totally confused and frusterated. It's all I've been trying to fix for the last day.
 
75mhz? I hope you mean 750mhz.

I know that winmodem is the cheapest one around... but try getting an Aopen, I've worked with a couple of those and I havent had a single problem with them.

Like I stated before, I've worked with Winmodems and only had problems with them.
 
Hmm, no.. I meant 75Mhz..

Heh, yeah.. I don't know if I want to do that. Someone in town gave me this computer to fix up and it looks I'm not doing a very good job... they wanted it cheap. *sigh*

What's the .vxd file? A vxd file is a driver - "virtual device driver" to be precise, and it's the component that communicates directly between an application and a hardware device. Once you determine what vxd file is acting up, you may be able to trace it back to pinpoint your problem.

Actually it depends on the modem.
I think a USR Winmodem will work on a 486dx2/66.
I've run a USR 56K Winmodem ISA in a P100 and it ran fine.
I've seen other brands that have to have MMX extensions and at least
a 166mhz pentium class processor.
Sounds like some registry trash which can be hard to fix.
Maybe an ISA modem would be a better choice.
A hardwire ISA would probably be perfect.

Well that would rule out the reg. trash.
 
try to go to usr/3com's website and pull up some info on the modem.... you should be able to find a minimum req. list

btw, if its an AMD @ 75mhz, isnt it a K5?
