Weird issue with forum speed I noticed

So the forum performance has been horrible for me lately. Each page takes about 30-60 seconds to load. I've been mostly using it on my laptop which is running IE7 on Vista.

I just tried accessing forums on my desktop for the first time (IE7 on XP) and the forum is flying.

All the other pages work just fine on the laptop. What gives?

The forum software was only partially to blame for some of the performance problems, anandtechs main database server has had a lot of problems over the last 2 weeks. Furthermore, a fusetalk update was put in place last night that dealt with performace. From what I see there are absolutely no performance issues at this time, pages are loading in under 70ms.

Weird, this is still happening for me. I'm actually holding three computers side by side right now: xp laptop, xp desktop and vista laptop. All 3 have all the updates and all 3 are running IE7.

Both XP machines are flying, meanwhile the Vista laptop is taking up to a minute to render each page. Anandtech site is the only one exhibitting this behavior. I'm starting to wonder if this is some issue related to ads or ad blocker in Vista.

Yes, the vista machine is using Kaspersky. But I've had it all this time - performance has gotten slow only after forum update.

Can you provide more information as to why? Anandtech is the only site that has issues and I'm seeing the same issue both in firefox and IE.

Sometimes links just appear to die for me. I re-click them 10 seconds later and it's instant, but if I wait those 10 seconds after clicking the first link, nothing will happen, as if the first request got thrown out.

Remove one of the best anti-virus programs on the market because of an abortion of a forum upgrade? I think not.

I have been seeing more than occasional long delays in page loading only with this forum. Usually clicking stop and then reclicking the link does the trick. I didn't know if it was a firefox issue (recently upgraded to 2.0.0.4) or a forum issue. I run Avira AntiVir free edition.

hehe, the issue almost always occurs when posting (replies or new posts) I figured it was the mods way of saying GTFO

Hi folks, are you still seeing slow performance? I wrote an app that runs behind the scenes and collects page performance and the slowest page time on the forums is 140ms (not slow?). Basically, this app hits the site every 10 minutes and collects perf data from page request times.

Cheers

Yes, I'm still seeing slow performance on my Vista/Kaspersky system. The rest are working fine.

It's very consistent - threads usually take about 30-60 seconds to come up. New post pop-up takes up to 2-3 minutes, every time. If you say the server performance is fine - could this be an issue with the content forum software is sending to my browser?

Btw, per others' suggestion I tried disabling Kaspersky but nothing changed.

I have Vista and KAV as well, and a forum page takes anywhere from 1-5 minutes to load for me since the update!

Test post on my laptop....

Result: the forum is still slower than before, but very usable.

Laptop is running XP and Norton.

Using Vista and Kapersky. Its quite snappy using IE7, practically instantaneous, but its dog slow (30-60secs a page) using firefox or opera. Disabling kapersky did nothing. Theres is still definitely an issue - its not a backend issue, its a browser issue.

Any update on this? This is very frustrating, considering Vista laptop is my main computer.

Argo, forum performance is actually been great for the past few days (we track it now). It has had some blips during db maintenance windows, and when we did a patch for fusetalk yesterday. Other than that, I can't replicate yet the issue you are having. Any other information that might help us track your particular issue down?

note: I'm running vista too.. so it doesnt have any thing to do with vista.

The forums have been slow for me as well. I'm on Vista using Avast and Firefox. I've noticed it since the upgrade. It takes around 5 seconds for the page to start loading, then sometimes everything shows up as white and it takes another 10 seconds or so for the page to render.

I'll try again under XP and see what happens.

I am on XP using FireFox 2.0.0.4 and AVG Free Edition, all with latest updates. I have cleared my cookies twice since the server updates, but both FF and IE7 either give me server time-outs or load after MINUTES of waiting. This applies to forums and the main Anandtech and DailyTech sites. Help! These are my preferred daily reading sites and I feel like a junky needing a fix, bad.

Still takes me an average of 30-60 seconds to load a thread in firefox or opera. IE7 is quite fast though 1-2 secs. And its been this way since the forum upgrade. Theres definitely a problem, and its not kapersky.

OK I just disabled Avast antivirus and the forums load up quicker, but still not as fast as the 'old forums'. IMO AT needs a CPU upgrade to deal with the new software. :light:

yep, i'm seeing load times come down to 10 to 30 seconds in Vista + Opera, IE7 worked fine the whole time. AT and DT sites are improving also.
