Weight training gloves

Does anyone use/recommend gloves for weight training? My hands are seriously getting rough and I like to keep them smooth for the wife. 😀

Just get a pumice stone to rub off the dead skin while your hands are wet from the shower.

Tell your wife that a man's hands are supposed to have calluses.

I never could get used to them. If you feel you absolutely need them, I doubt one brand is all that much better than another, you just want something to keep your palms from touching the bar directly, right?

Tried them for a while, It really hurt my grip strength. When I decided to stop using them and started dead lifting again it really tore up my hands at first until they got callused again.

I've had calluses on my hands the past 5 years from lifting. I don't like gloves to be honest, never have never will. If you feel the need to use them, just stop by a sporting goods store and get some.

ever considered using chalk instead? i prefer chalk instead of gloves. and yes, a man's hands are supposed to have calluses.

Nah I don't want to get chalk all over me.

I don't mind calluses right below the bottom of my fingers on my hand but I hate getting them on the fleshy part of my hand under my thumb. I have a strong grip so wearing gloves doesn't bother me when lifting heavy. They also work as a barrier between my hand and the equipment that has others germs on them (probably not all the effective)

Gloves are great. Really helps get a grip on weights that could otherwise be out of control for you. I use Harbinger leather gloves with padded rubber grip and full wrist wrap.

I've found that the wrist wrap forces you to keep your hand straight by reminding you that you're bending your hands up. It actually seems to cause an increase in how much you're working your forearms. It pretty much prevents you from cheating.

I've stopped using gloves years ago, now it's no gloves but wrist wraps and wrist straps depending on what I'm lifting. I really don't mind the calluses.
Every now and then I use chalk, but thats mostly for deadlifts.

Gloves will not let you develop your grip as well as going non gloved. Realistically, its not that big of difference, but unless your gym doesnt have hand sanitizer for you to use, I wouldn't bother with gloves.

i have gloves, but dont use them much. i have a harbinger one as well and a lighter one from nike cuz i kept losing the harbingers.

but as mentioned, gloves wont help you develop your grip. and developing your grip actually bulks up your forearms as an added benefit. Actual bulking of your forearms would require actual forearm exercises otherwise...

i would definitely agree.. i purchased gloves thinking they would be great for my workouts waaaaay back when i first started lifting..but came to realize that i really like the feel of the metal in my hands.. and as stated above... definitely helps develop your grip.

I can't say I reccomend them, but I use gloves. Unfortunately, my lifting days are sorely limited, (always have been--I try to lift when I can, which isn't the best, but at worst, it burns calories, which I need) but I use gloves. For one thing, the bars I use are way too rough, and pinch the skin, so that I can barely get any pulling or lifting done at all, because I have glaring signals in my head to stop--and it's pain unrelated to my muscles.

So gloves for me are a good idea for lifting. If you're just worried about callouses, Sports Authority, or any ol' Sports Place will have basic gloves, which is about all you need, really.

I've never used gloves in the gym, but I always wear wrist straps. They give much of the protection of gloves and considerable help with heavy dumbells. Also, when I have the choice, I use smoother bars rather than the ones that feel like 50 grit sandpaper.

I wash my hands when I get back from the gym, first thing. Also refrain from touching hands to mouth in the gym.

I used Harbingers for a couple years when I first started lifting. I stopped due to the grip strength issue as others have mentioned. Nothing wrong with callused hands.

Yeah when they are hard and callused from earning an honest living. Hell I use gloves and I still have calusses, just not as bad if I didn't use gloves. Maybe I get them because I have such a strong grip or maybe because my hands sweat so much. I sure don't want to have to use chalk, it's such a fucking mess.

Yeah, I don't seem to get calluses from a keyboard, so it's my attempt to look like I earn an honest living.
