Weight loss thread...

While at work today I decided to take the stairs (I've gotta go up and down like 10 times a day so I usually just take the elevator). When I got to the top I was really breathing heavy.

Over the last 4 years, my weight has gone like this:

242 lbs -> 170 -> 230

Right now I am at 230 lbs and I need to make some big changes. I think my biggest problem is just the food that I eat. Lots of fast food, pizza, soft drinks, etc. I do get exercise playing hockey every week, but I could go to the gym as well just to stay a little more active.

I'm going to make this my weight loss thread. Maybe I'll update it once a week just so I can see my progress (I'll probably forget about the thread though...)

Update: June 2, 2005

I didn't start making any real changes until a week ago. I was 232 when I started, I'm now 229.

I'm going to the gym 4 days a week.

My goal is to lose about 2 lbs a week. I would love to reach 200 by September, but that will take some dedication.

Update: June 27, 2005

Well, after my first hard week, I ended up getting sick for about 2 weeks. That took away all my energy and motivation to go to the gym. I've been sedentary for almost a month now and have gone back to 232 lbs. I'm going back to the gym today.

I also have 5 flights of stairs here at work that I have been trying to take. In the morning I am too lazy but I want to try to take them every other time. I am 6'1" tall and about 210 pounds. I need to take some weight off my mid section. (beer)

I get winded going up 1 flight of stairs. I find that odd, especially since I can run a mile in a little over 6 minutes and I can run for an hour. But even the slightest things like walking will make me breathe hard. I know people who don't get tired at all going up a flight of stairs, but if you asked them to jog they wouldn't last a minute.

I think you're right about that. When I sprint or do stuff like that, I find myself straining and holding my breath.

I guess "winded" is too strong of a term though, since I'm fine once I start breathing heavier. If you think about it, it makes sense that you'd have to breathe harder when your workload increases. Once I get into a rhythm I'm ok.

Don't skip lunch! Skipping meals ruins your metabolism. You should eat 5-6 small meals each day. I lost 8 pounds doing that and going to the gym 5-6 days a week.

Exactly. Slowing down your metabolism is almost a surefire way to gain weight in the long run.

Same here. I just signed up with the placem y wife goes. I plan on trying to swim every day after work for an hour or so. I'm only around 185 but should be more like 170. Guess we'll see what happens.

I *know* I'm overweight because of what I eat but I'm really finicky about fruits and vegetables and such so hopefully working out will help.

Good job. My primary motivation for being thin and fit is that I feel superior to those who are not. Maybe you can use that to your own benefit. If you can properly meld your psyche to look down on those who don't have the wherewithawl to stay fit you'll find that you no longer "allow" yourself to be like them.

My week so far:

Saturday- play football in a league. Get home, play football with my brother and his friends. Later in the evening, we had another catch.

Sunday- had another catch, ran around and sprinted.
Monday- ran around more, had another catch and ran around
Tuesday- same thing
Yesterday, went to the gym, then went home and had a catch.

I'm 22, 5'8 and don't smoke.

My shifts in hockey are usually like a minute to a minute and a half. I've become quite a bit slower carrying around an extra 60 lbs. I get winded when I bend down to tie up my skates now.

I need to make some big changes, because I'm getting really bothered by this...

Edit:

Also, my resting heart rate used to be like 41, now it's close to 60! (this is when I was 170, but I wasn't in great shape then either.)

I think 180 is about where I want to be. 160lbs, but with an extra 20 lbs of muscle. I'm a big guy, so 180 (with muscle) would be about perfect I think.

Most of your calorie burn is due to your BMR (basal metabolic rate), not from burning calories at the gym. Slowing down your metabolism makes you burn less calories while you are sitting still. Going to the gym plays into that because muscle burns calories even while you are sitting. If you don't pack more muscle onto your body, you won't burn as many calories while sleeping/sitting/living.

Personally, I prefer to eat right, 5-6x a day, go to the gym, play sports, and do cardio.
