That's not true, Intel did not pressure anybody, those were just rumors. Intel just said that Atom is not for sale as a standalone cpu, so you have to purchase Atom + Chipset. This brings the cost up, because now you have to essentially purchase a second chipset, and discard Intel's.

ION + Atom CPU is ~2.5x the price of Intel chipset + Atom CPU, which is where the problem lies. ($30~35 vs $75~$80)

If the price is so much higher, wouldn't it be more sensible to use an nvidia discrete graphics chip? I mean, most of the Ion netbooks are a bit bigger anyway.

Not only that, from what i've heard a term of the atom licensing is that no pcie slots can be on the motherboards
I would love to see via cpu + nvidia chipset
I believe that could beat the atom

I don't really get the 'buzz' about nano. At 25W TDP, AMD has chips that are just as low power and a similar level of performance. I think AMD even has a dual core out now that fits in that TDP.

Why are you ignoring the ULV models that have a tpd of 5-8 W?

I think that's netbook licensing, not atom. As in, pay 3x the cost for windows if you break it.
But Intel is the only one who makes Atom motherboards, so none will have pcie slots.

Didn't know they existed. But Intel have ULV Core 2's, which will blow away a nano in performance. AMD could probably produce a few token 5-8W chips as well, underclock and undervolt a single core 65nm cpu.

There's also Nvidia's Tegra, which looks very interesting for things like cellphones. Once they develop it more, it could turn into something like Fusion.
