Go to BlueNile, order a set, go to tiffany's, get blue box, put ring in box, viola.

Seems like the blue box is kinda pointless since the best man is going to hand the rings to the officiant during the ceremony - no one will ever see it.

Platinum has always been expensive.
I have a 4mm two-tone (14k gold and white gold) ring with diamond cut- which means cuts in the metal to make it reflect like a diamond. It's not as cheesy as it sounds 😛
I got my ring from Zales for $485, i think it was, and my wife's wedding ring there also, but will never buy from them again. Her engagement ring is modest and from Lundstrom's, which is a smaller but much better jeweler, imo. Much better service, plus they offer free cleanings and such.
I haven't had any problem with my ring fading or yellowing, really.

I would probably be more apt to purchase at a b&m site, just to ensure proper sizing.
Yeah, that's an issue with ordering from an online shop. Blue Nile offers a free ring sizer, and I got that (they send you a 15% discount code with the sizer).

I asked my girlfriend to size herself with it, and she came up with a 5. She also went to a bunch of shops and got herself sized as "less than a 5". Thinking I'd go with the ring sizer, I got her a size 5 engagement ring.

That was later exchanged for a 4.25 (they don't list it, but they have them) and then later exchanged for a 4.

The exchanges were free and they didn't cut the band to resize it, they remounted the stone into a new setting. It took just a couple of phone calls where the Blue Nile people were very polite, understanding, and they know their stuff. It took up time and sending the ring (diamond) back to them via registered/insured mail cost like $20 a pop, I think. Sending it back to me via FedEx was free.

I saved a lot of money buying the diamond (thousands of dollars), and I got exactly the rock I want, so the extra effort in resizing has been worth it for me.

Sounds like good CS.. but definitely a hassle. It's worth it for significant savings, though.. I just wouldn't bother for like $100 or something.

I have a platinum band with sort of a matte finish in the center and a high polish on either side. It was around $100 2 years ago and we spent another $100-200 on a diamond and sapphire ring for my wife made from a ring her mother had.

I don't get the titanium thing. People realize that titanium isn't a precious metal, right? I mean, it's on par with aluminum in a lot of ways including bulk material price.

I considered a titanium watch band a couple of years ago, but went against it when I saw how the oxide (the dark grey coating) scratches off. Is this not the same deal with the rings? Are they coated with a darker grey oxide, and doesn't it scratch off?

I know it's not a precious metal, but I don't really care. After spending thousands on my fiancee's diamond/sapphire/platinum set, $100 for a great-looking customized wedding band sounded pretty sweet to me, even if the raw material is cheap. Plus, titanium has a lot of desirable qualities for a ring - it's durable, light, hypoallergenic, easy to care for, and a poor conductor of heat (so the ring doesn't feel hot or cold on your skin). You can even get inlays or tension set rings in titanium.

As for "coating", the ring I got definitely does not have anything that will scratch off. In fact, I don't think most watch bands do either so I'm surprised that you had that experience.
My ring is made solely of a titanium alloy, with no plating or coating of any kind. The metal itself is grayer than platinum, but if you had a highly polished titanium ring I am sure many people would mistake it for platinum on your hand.

heh, my wife and I spent $50 on ebay getting a matching set of 14k gold wedding bands

you guys are insane to waste so much money on something so trivial

i know that its not on par with other precious metals, however, i am getting my future husband one because he is not a jewelry guy and plus, its something different for a nice price. Plus, i think he would get a kick out of it being more "raw" in a sense. Meh, to each is to own!
