When I was assisting my wife plan for our wedding, my rule of thumb to avoid drama was simply "who ever pays for the wedding, calls the shots." I made sure my family, her family, and our friends understood "no pay = no say".

We did what we wanted to do and that was the end of that. If you were involved, then we made sure you were on top of your sh!t. If you can't make it, then oh well. If you're hurt that you didn't get invited, tough. If you're a groomsmen or bridesmaid and can't make it or cause too many issues, then you were simply removed or replaced.

We, well mainly I, was heartless during the planning. It all worked out well in my opinion hehe.

Sounds about right. Wife and I paid for everything 😉

Man you guys can pull off such reasonably priced affairs 🙁 I'll be spending a boat-load on the engagement party and the wedding. My only hope is that the in-laws are generous enough so that the gifts offset a chunk of the price.

Sometimes it kinda sucks living in the NYC/NJ area

All depends on what you're willing to do.

I did a Elvis wedding complete with pizza at the reception for about $500.

My Star Trek wedding with Ferengi minister on the bridge of the Enterprise didn't cost much more than that.

Zeze, I know this is going to be tough, but you need to start watching Sex and the City, stat! It may help you avoid some of the pitfalls coming down the road. Find the episodes leading up to Charlotte, Miranda, and Carrie's various weddings and pay close attention to the avoidance schemes implemented by Steve, Harry, and Mr. Big.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Father of the Bride, Steel Magnolias, Bridezillas, Say Yes to the Dress, and Trainspotting may also be of some help.

Even if you don't think your fiance is like that, she has been exposed to the same pop-culture, and there may be some rotting vestiges of wedding entitlement hidden in her.
