Hi all, I'm looking to throw together a website for my room mates WoW guild and am looking for the companies I should use (or stay away from). How much bandwidth or space do you think we'd need? I hear a lot about godaddy, are they actually any good? Also I don't know any HTML to speak of, I'll just be using Dreamweaver. How about Ventrilo servers as well?

Domain name?
Webspace?
Vent server?

Domain name?

NameCheap.com

Webspace?

dartworth and DeviousTrap offer FREE web hosting to AT'ers.

If you're looking for paid hosting, what's your budget?

For $5/mo you can get a lot, check WHT for hosting offers.

Vent server?

Anvox.com isn't the cheapest but I used them to host the Unofficial ATOT Vent server for almost 1 year. I selected a Chicago based server, the pings were low and reliability was good. I contacted their support a few times and always received a quick and friendly reply.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Hope that helps :)

How much space and bandwidth do you think they'd need for a guild page? There wouldn't be TOO many pictures on it.

You don't need a lot of bandwidth and storage space for WoW guild sites, most guild members don't even go there except to check raid schedule and DKP. I doubt the guild will post many pics aside from killing the MC bosses, BWL bosses, AQ bosses, etc. I would aim for something affordable 1st and upgrade when it's necessary. Pointless to waste money on bandwidth and storage your guild won't need. You can always use free pic hosting sites like imageshack or imagevenue to save money if members turn out to be pic posting hordes.

This is coming from a guy who got addicted to WoW and was part of a high end raiding guild for almost a year.

That depends on the content but 100MB should be enough.

Why not try both FREE AT hosts? They both offer 250MB free disk space. For testing purposes, you don't even need a domain, just use a subdomain. So total cost to you? $0

Subdomain = FREE
Web hosting = FREE

There's just one problem w/ 1and1. If you register a domain w/ them w/ the hosting package, they'll keep your domain for life. Unless of course you keep renewaling the hosting package w/ them.

Hmm, I'll probably host the domain name on namecheap and then use the 1&1 beginner package. $2.50 a month is pretty crazy... at least it sounds like it is.

Oh, what type of forum should we use in your opinions? PHPBB? vBulletin? Something else?

You mean register the domain with NameCheap.com and host it with 1and1, right?

Good luck with 1and1 ;) You should check out a cPanel web host with Fantastico.

Best - vBulletin

Best free - SMF or MyBB

Why pirate it when you can download it for free?

phpBB isn't the most secure forum software. So if you don't mind constantly updating and securing it against hackers and script kiddies, then go for it.

Heh, he probably just did that then. For some reason I thought PHPBB costed money.

Edit: Why do so many places use PHPBB then and not SMF, etc?

Wow, your attitude took a turn south really fast. You were nice in your first post...

Edit: But thank you for the links. They really do sound horrible.
