Big ups to madgenius. I used them for about a year and am actually looking to put up a couple new sites. Love their price point for basic web hosting, portal is nice, customer service is good, vivi is cool, etc., etc. Highly recommended!

If you do run your PC 24/7 you could host it yourself, just spin up a VM with a LAMP install, and you could get a free control panel to handle managing it.

Whenever I needed something I always went with Mad Genius. Ran a guild website through Vivi for ~ a year or so. I felt bad cancelling but the guild fell apart 🙁

I've been debating setting up another personal site for a while. Dunno maybe someday.

Why even run a VM? That's a waste of resources since you can just run your web server on the host operating system.

You could, and they to make a decent LAMP install for windows...called XAMPP

I would do a linux VM though, unless that's what you are running as your main rig.

If you want to toy with it, you could snapshot it before you break it, move it around if you get another box that you want to run 24/7, and that way you can run it linux instead of windows, haha...assuming you are using windows as your host.

I suppose, but web sites aren't hard to move to another box if you want to and MySQL/Apache/PHP work pretty much the same on Windows as they do on Linux. Don't get me wrong, if I were running a dedicated web server I'd run Linux. I wouldn't use Apache or PHP though.

Understandable, and no you don't have to use those specifically, they're just the packages I know of that work well.

It's also a good time to learn linux if you don't know it 😀

This thread reminded me to renew my MG hosting for another year. 🙂

Vivi – Does MG offer Python/shell access by any chance?

Found this thread while searching OT. Quick question vivi, currently, I'm able to host my 5 domains with my current host. Will I be able to do the same?

Yes, you would be able to do the same. You just add them as addon domains...better yet, if it is cPanel, you can usually migrate running a few scripts.
