I have been with eleven2.com for a few years. They actually bought the previous host I was with. They have been in control for a year and a half and everything has gone smoothly. Never sought the internet ratings on these guys but in my experience, their support has been great and their prices are great (linux only, support for RoR besides all the standard stuff).

Yes, you would be able to do the same. You just add them as addon domains...better yet, if it is cPanel, you can usually migrate running a few scripts.

Sounds good! Will be signing up later today. Will I be able to access my account before my domain transfers over? I was planning on transferring my domain over once I get joomla setup.

If you are having us handle your domain, it can take 1-3 days, depending on where you are coming from. You will have a URL to access though while you wait.

If you are leaving your domain with your registrar, you just change your nameservers and can go live in as long as your DNS updates with the registrar.

Another vote for Hostgator. I've been with them continuously for over 10 years now. No major problems. Hosted many sites with them. Even a few small commercial sites.

Thanks vivi for all the help! So far I've been way more than satisfied with the service! All of my email/ticket requests are answered swiftly.

One last thing I need to do before I switch off my old server is I need to transfer my mail from the old to the new. The old server uses IMAP as well and I only need to do this with 2 accounts. Any recommendations?

NP, enjoy :)

The only good way I know of doing a transfer would be to do a full cPanel account transfer...or just copy it into your new inbox manually.

If you setup your old box, you should be able to manually copy it all over, with a drag and drop, and you'll have all your folders.

I think I got it. I setup both hers and mine account in Thunderbird and trimmed her email down (removed all the empty folders).

Does madgenius use imap or pop3?

I think I got it working. I've been transferring the mail directly from the old account to the new one via thunderbird. Thanks for all the help!

so vivi, if i were to get the basic package from you, i can host 2 separate domains on there that have 2 separate site content? both of these sites don't get a lot of traffic at all and are for the most part static.

yes, you will just have to set one up as the main domain, and then once configured, you'll log into cPanel and add a second addon domain.

damn okay, i might do that. one of my sites has a very small database that stores a weekly file that is updated from the person i made it for. if i were to do a full backup of the site through the console interface. do you have a way i can just import the zip file and it will handle everything? it's been probably 5 years or more since i've done that, but i believe cpanel had a way you could back up a site to a zip file, then import it into another cpanel and it would work "out the box".

If it's running cPanel, yes, but it would have to be your main, shared account.

If it's cPanel, you can log into the cPanel page and click FULL backup.

ok it is running cpanel.

one more question - what exactly does having one "main" account mean over it being the "addon" account? like what would it matter (to me) of having one the main account vs an addon account?

cPanel does a good job explaining it:

http://blog.cpanel.net/managing-multiple-domains-from-a-single-cpanel-account/

Basically, you have one main account which directory is: /home/domain1/public_html

and then your addons wil be: /home/domain1/public_html/domain2

so you COULD potentionaly access the second site via

domain1.com/domain2

But domain2.com will work as a normal site. I just like to see things in directories to make things make logistical sense.

Hopefully that isn't confusing :)

okay cool gotcha, so it wouldn't really matter then i guess. there is 1 site that is 100% static with no db or anything, there is another one that uses a db a little bit. i'd make that one the primary one.

so i now have both of my sites hosted on a site. what exactly would be the process of transferring the domains to your hosting on the same $4 plan? and how long would that process take?

i'm getting a tad annoyed with this other one since i have to wait to hear back quite a while from them when i have a question. they have been good to me the past 3 or 4 years or so, but it's also gone down a couple times and i had no clue until the site that i host for someone, that person called me.

i signed up last night for my 2nd site there on another account and forgot about seeing this thread on here before. wish i searched here before i did that.

If all sites you want moved are already in that cPanel account you are talking about, we'd take the zip file, and then I'd use the cPanel tool to import everything.

You would then want to change your DNS over to the new nameservers (which you'll get via email). That'd be it! Then just wait for DNS propagation.

ah okay, for some reason i was thinking that "domain transfers" were more than just changing the nameservers. just been so long since i've messed with this stuff lol.

i will look into it over the weekend though.

Where do you have the domains? If it is with your current host i'd advise moving them to namecheap.com, or something else that you can always manage yourself. THEN get hosting with us and make the DNS changes.

Transfering domains out of a host can be a chore. Most recently, we found out a clients previous hosts LOCKS the domain for up to 10 days until they actually transfer it, thus making it unusable and unroutable...the silliest thing i've ever heard, but that's how they do it.

I try to tell anyone who wants a domain to always get it with a reputable domain company like namecheap, whatever.

my domains are registered at godaddy, which is not the current host.

Then you are good, just change the TLS to something low, like 500, then it shouldn't take as long for DNS to update once you make the move!

ok cool. and holy crap godaddy is so annoying their site is like a big ass spamfest. i only use it cause there are always coupons making stuff dirt cheap. but i haven't gotten a domain in ages. i feel like i'm being coerced by the feds into buying all this extra shit while i'm trying to check out.
