Wearing large headphones around campus.... geeky?

The football coach is wearing a pair on the school's website, but i doubt that he has it hooked up to an ipod. Is it socially acceptable to have an MP3 player and large headphones around on campus? I hate the in ear kind, poor sound and make my ears hurt and i prefer the Sens.

No, it is socially acceptable now 🙂

Oh the other hand, making a thread about it here is geeky! 😛

By "in ear" do you mean earbuds or canals? Canals >> earbuds. Earbuds hurt many people's ears, canals tend to be easier on the ear AND they sound a whole lot better.

You don't have to lug around huge headphones to get good sound.

Plus if you're going to carry full size cans carry something decent - Make it worthwhile.

Ety ER-4P with the 4S adapter would make a nice portable setup that doubles for home use.

Do these Senns have the coiled type wiring? Coiled wiring is easy to manage but may be perceived as geeky.

I own those cans. They do not have coiled wires. They sound pretty good to me. I use them at home, I think they are too big to wear around campus. I would get a pair of ear buds for being mobile.

no, but it does have about a 7 footish line on it, have it rolled up tied with a rubber band in my jacket pocket, where the MP3 Player is, since i lost the belt clip

to be honest, i get more stares from wearing my shure e2c earphones than I would if I would wear some grados or senns.

In an age of chic small white ipod headphones, I'd say you'd get some weird looks if you wore large headphones around campus.

I can't believe someone knows how to use the word "chic" properly. You just made my day.

No, but wearing those damn ugly headphones will. Besides, those are not nearly big enough. You want to get notice around campus, wear some Audio-Technica A and AD series cans (cpus are 1" thick and the size of a CD).

do those require an external amp?

For around campus, the norm is either earbuds or those ones that are separate and wrap around the ears. These types are easily stowed in pockets or backpacks. Big headphones would be seen as geeky/extremely antisocial.

Seems you've never tried canalphones such as the Shures or Etymotics; these actually go into your ear canals rather than into the outside portion of your ears the way earbuds do, and offer superb sound quality. On comfort - most come with a variety of ear tips, one is likely to be a perfect fit.
