it's like wearing a baseball hat in a nice restaurant

but i suppose formality is lost on kids nowadays

people here would wear doc martens to a wedding... so no point in arguing

Why not? I would wear my pink fuzzy bunny slippers to the White House if I felt like it. Hell, I bet even GWB wears pink fuzzy bunny slippers around the White House (in private hehehe)

one word: how?

flip flops are shoeware that are perfectly accepted by society and are worn by everyone. just because the white house is a very well known and accepted symbol for what America stands for, its still a fvckin house that's painted white. unless you have major toejam or a feet that reeks like fat fish, i say we should all go barefoot.

flip flops are generally considered part of more casual dress. When i'm putting on my tux or suit, i dont really think "oh hey, where are my flip flops". I have some nice leather ones, but to be honest, i wouldn't consider wearing them to an interview, etc.
Their is just formality that is practiced/established.

i dont think this is a big deal : but if you are going to make it a big deal out of it, at least make a big deal of the fact they are wearing flipflops and not turn this into "YAP&NtinOTT" (yet another P&N thread in Off Topic Thread). Debating formalities is the issue on hand, no the politics of the man in the house.

Truth. Yeah, let's give the f@ck-all to the war in Iraq, North Korean nukes, or bombings in London; STOP FLIP FLOPS!

EDIT: Although, wearing them in the Bankruptcy Court will get you thrown out by certain judges. One of the people my firm was going after for violating the bankruptcy codes was thrown out of court because she had flip-flops on. The judge postponed the hearing and ordered her to 'obtain acceptable footwear' for the next hearing. It took all I had to keep straightfaced hearing him hand that ruling down.

HBalzer, 77 ppd and still shooting blanks. I have the solution, oh ho ho ho yes I do.

1)Purchase milk
2)Acquire cookie
3)Eat milk and cookie
4)Relish flavor
5)Acquire pint of Haagen-Dazs pistachio ice cream.
6)Eat pint.
7)Relish flavor.
8)Go watch the best movie ever.
9)Return a new man.
10)Put your flip flops and freedom fries somewhere else.

p.s. You never really learn to appreciate the value of anthropomorphic birds until you've seen them waddle and slide 70 miles on an ice surface.

p.p.s. You replied to my OP with "what studies?" FYI, text with blue font in posts are usually clickable. Welcome to ATOT. P&N is next door.

p.p.p.s. Penguins eat your family.

Yeah, I'm deeply offended whenever I meet someone and they're wearing flip-flops.

Would you wear flip flops to a business meeting? Why would you wear them to meet the president of the United States?

I am a Northwestern Student am disappointed with the lack of forsight by those great athletes....BUT we have to remember that they are girl athletes...rather HE-SHEs that have almost no common sense. They dont know any better. So GIVE IT A BREAK! :D

1. Yes, many were caught when we invaded Afghanistan. Many have also been caught in Pakistan. Where's the big list of the ones we caught in Iraq?

-Saddam Hussein, Link
2. You can't be that dense. You think there is a limited supply of cheap explosives in the world, a limited amount of funding to buy them, or a limited supply of terrorists willing to use them? We don't even truly know how many resources the terrorists have. All it takes is a few people and a few pounds of explosives to wreak havoc on our society; according to most intelligence officials, the question isn't IF, but WHEN will they next attack us on our soil. And when they do, your argument for Iraq will go out the window, just like it did for the people in London.

-First you say ?You think there is a limited supply of cheap explosives in the world, a limited amount of funding to buy them, or a limited supply of terrorists willing to use them?? then you say ?We don't even truly know how many resources the terrorists have?

3. You're correct, but Saddam isn't the only leader who hates the US and we certainly aren't invading them.

-one at a time

Looks like you answered any questions we had about you in one reply. Thanks kiddo!

So basically you are saying i have to write some smart remark because i don't have an answer?

How can I reply to idiocy?

1) How is Saddam an al-Qaeda operative? If he was involved in terrorist acts against the US, where is the proof?

2) Was there even a reply in there? If you think hard enough maybe you would get it

3) I'm sure you have the full support of America and it's government behind you. BTW, when is the last time you visited a recruiting office?

I support the troops more than you can know without me having to kill you. Figure that one out.

Apparently you are good at replying with idiocy.

Apparently you are good at backing up your statements.

The September 11th Commission dismissed ANY collaborative relationship between al Qaeda and Iraq.

And "one at a time?" When was Saddam captured? December 2003? That was almost 20 months ago. If it took seven months to find Saddam, technically we should have caught 3 more leaders who hated the U.S.A.

*Editted for grammar and spelling.

It is bad when you P&N people have to come to off topic for schooling.

1st Amol you say ?but but The September 11th Commission dismissed ANY collaborative relationship between al Qaeda and Iraq. ? and you blindly believe did you even read it? They panel claimed while there were contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda, "but they do not appear to have resulted in a collaborative relationship." And you really believe that?

2nd Do you all really believe there is only one terror network in the world and al Qaeda is it?

3rd I really love this about you anti Bush anti Iraq war people you all say ?Why did we attack Iraq when Iran and North Korea are such big threats? Just like you all supported the Iraq war before the Democrats decided it might be to their benefit to be against it just to get votes. Let?s say we do attack Iran I have no doubt a year into it and you all will be crying I hate Bush he just wants oil.

I am tired of you all using the same old banter being fed to you by the Democrats and the media. I?m not saying Republicans can be trusted either I?m saying start thinking about things before you accept them as truth. Before you respond think about it al Qaeda leaders met with Saddam but they were just shooting the sh!t and playing pool right?

Some flip-flops cost upwards of $100. They looked well-dressed to me. Who cares? Basketball players and football players have shown up in jerseys.

I really don't care what shoes they wear in to the whitehouse. But I guess I understand if some people would give a damn, its like going to a funeral wearing some sort of a loud shirt or yellow tie.

In the end, we can logically conclude that as a matter of respect for the house and its place in society and history, the lacrosse players might have represented their organization in a better light, and yet we can equalyl conclude that their casual dress exemplified the open-ddor nature that the White House ocne had where anyone could visit the Home of the President of the United States, which is now, debatably, the msot powerful position in all of humanity.

God I love this country and its eccentric level of discourse:D

That is quite an eloquent and incisive post. I don't think this topic could be summed up any more logically.

I know we've become a lot more casual as a society, and decorum has gone out the window, but I think that if you're going to meet the president, you ought to not show up in beachwear. If you're just touring the white house, wear what you want. But meeting the president is supposed to be an honor, at least care enough to wear nicer sandals. If someone was giving me an award, I wouldn't wear sneakers.

In 2001, Bush's daughter Jenna, then 19, wore black flip-flops in court, along with pink capri pants and a sleeveless black shirt, when she pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol.
Maybe these players took their shoe idea from Bush's daughter. If she can wear flip flops to court, then these lacross players can were them to the White House. I don't think a court room should be considered any less important than the white house when it comes to being properly dressed.

I wouldn't personally wear flip flops to meet the president/prime minister/etc of any country, but whatever. I don't think they meant to offend or anyting, they probably didnt even have any dress shoes with them. They don't live in DC.
