We need more people so we can have this?

There's clearly something wrong with your head.
It's pretty strange that I see breeding like barnyard animals then having the byproduct sucked out of the woman's vagina as disturbing. Clearly that's the most effective method of population control, if you're breeding rats.

It's just very telling that when you see "planned parenthood" you instantly jump to "abortion as population control" rather than... you know, all the other services PP provides for planning parenthood. I know you don't like concerning yourself with trivialities like "being informed", but it's true.

Good news for you then! That comprises like 1% of abortions so it’s exceedingly rare. The overwhelming majority of abortions are similar to a miscarriage, something I personally doubt you lose a lot of sleep over.

That's not what the OP said, and that's what I was responding to.

I don't like abortion, but I it appears to be a necessary part of modern society.

He doesn't mention any particular type of abortion and I was just telling you that the scenario you envision isn't how it would work in practice so there's nothing to be concerned about.

The solution to population control is mandatory birth control. We have technologies that are quite promising for this, with a small push and a little money thrown at the problem we could manage a stable world population.

We take a technology like RISUG, which is a one-time injection that blocks sperm, is 100% effective, had no major side effects, is completely and easily reversable, and lasts at least 10 years, we could effectively stop practically all unplanned pregnancy worldwide in a single generation. This technology just needs some funding to complete trials and make sure it is as safe as it currently appears.

Once we have this ready we could start mandating the injection in all teenage boys. By the time that shot wears off they will be adults and can decide for themselves if they want to take it again.

I'm not going to lie, sounds like the lead up to ideocracy. Those who should get the shot won't.

How can you be a man without bullets! /s

But abortion is the most contentious issue PP is involved in. It was just a pivot point for getting this thread started. Those conditions in Hong Kong are something to think about, uh, seeing them maybe helpful in "being informed?" A lot of people are blinkered from seeing over population as a thing. There are oodles of brainwashed or simply ignorant people, many of whom vote.

No. Terrible idea.

Not satire?

The only place that AFAIK has instituted mandatory birth control is China. What they are doing today, I don't know, conditions change there pretty fast. I recommend Nury Turkel's recent book.

Kind of like dying. It's been said that death is life's greatest invention.

I was addressing Greenman, not you, guess that's what I get for not quoting.

Oh Boy. Any government capable of supporting such an idea would be better served by a well thought out eugenics program augmented by AI designed genetic manipulation.

We could also remove all children from their parents care and raise them scientifically such that most will attain a sense of inner self worth and the ethical responsibility that is the natural byproduct of it.

Our culture produces people who lack self worth and grow up needy of attention. Nothing quite like sex to make you forget how fucked up your life is. Those who hate themselves, all of us, are endlessly seeking to fill that emptiness where love once existed.

Our motto: Always focus on treating the symptoms so we never see where the root of the problem lies. "Me feeling bad about myself, and having a hole where my soul should be, you must be kidding. No way I will ever open up and be vulnerable again,"

Care to explain why? I'm not suggesting eugenics. I'm just suggesting that we make pregnancy opt-in instead of opt-out.
Just think of a world where pregnancy was a 100% voluntary choice, preferably by both partners (while it has not been researched yet, the concept behind RISUG should work on women too.) The population would stabilize in a generation and we would solve many of the worst problems humanity faces.

In a vacuum I think this is a practical, reasonable idea. In our world as it is, I see it being applied in a problematic fashion.
