That really sucks. 🙁

Haven't you had the dog over a month? I thought distemper manifest itself after a few weeks? I wonder if the dog caught it at the vet office somehow?

We've had him for a week and two days.

Oh... I guess it just seemed like a long time because so much has happened! 🙁

You're telling me. 🙁 I can't believe all we've been through with him. For the past few days we thought it was over, and that he was going to recover. He's been playing, eating, being a puppy. Now this. 🙁

🙁

Well if he is suffering it might be for the better.

You are a great person for going through all of this.

I have no idea how to go home and keep him separate from our other dog. I may have to lock him in a room upstairs and then stay in there with him for the night, because he will cry if he is alone in there if we are in the house. The poor little guy has no idea.

I know this much, I will never get a dog or cat from a rescue society again. I'm sure there are good one's, but this is now the second animal we have rescued that turned out to have a terminal illness. Our cat was a rescue, and has HCM and will be dead within a couple of years from it most likely.

Wow that sucks. Last I checked he was doing so much better.

It hurts, but I thinks the best thing might be to put him down. His quality of life is highly likely to be diminished, if he even survives. His system and energy levels are probably so compromised from all the struggle that I'd guess he has a near zero chance of survival, and he's only going to suffer until he finally passes.

🙁

I think that's sadly common in rescue groups and humane societies. Both of my cats (adopted several years apart) had tapeworms when I adopted them. WTF...

My wife called the rescue society about this. They requested that we call our vet and allow them to be able to get information from the vet about this because apparently they have SEVENTEEN other puppies with the same symptoms. :|

Look at it in this way - at least the pup & cat were loved and cared for before passing away. Way better than being put down simply because no one wants to care for you.

Don;t give up - both my dogs are rescues. The shepherd-collie's never been sick for a day in her life but the black lab pulled thru a couple of really bad times and she's one of the most liveliest dogs I've ever known.

Poor little guy. Here is to hoping it isn't distemper and that he can bounce back from this latest blow.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been following this thread, and the little guy's progress. Does Brody want to fight? It's so unfair that he came so far only to live such a short life. 🙁

🙁
don't write off the little guy just yet though. Although accept it as distemper, with basically all dogs getting the vaccine that means there have got to be very few carriers.
But damn, that's just the worst thing you can hear. Poor guy. But yea, I'd say disinfect your house too, just to remove all chances of it spreading to your other dog. Just as precautionary measures, as you don't want to take the chance just because your other dog had the vaccine.

🙁 here's to you and the little guy, and to hopefully hearing better news from the second lab test.

tapeworms are extremely common in all puppies and kittens iirc. It really doesn't have much to with the the shelter. We got out puppy from a farm. The thing is, when your in an environment of multiple animals, worms are very common. That's why puppies and kittens get them, because they are around all of their litter and don't stray that far from the mom. Close quarters living = things to share.

🙁 🙁 🙁 awww hopefully it is NOT distemper than. That many puppies down from distemper will just be a very bad day for everyone involved.

my brotheres 6 month old lab had to have surgery and the next day he was seeping fluids and there was no way to save him so we had to put him to sleep and it was really sad i am not a cryer but i couldnt help myself. his stitches were bleeding on his bellah and we were feeding him ice cream before he died so he could at least have a happy meal before he had to die :*(***

trmiv, fought a valiant fight for this little fellow but for your sake and his sake it's best to put him down so he's out of his misery
