Ordered mine by phone Sunday morning. They said delivery Feb 2 but it came UPS today. Sent from the closest store (about 100 miles away) complete with rebate receipt and rebate booklet. My Tivo thanks the OP!

I went yesterday to my local OM. They were out of stock so I asked for a raincheck. The employee that was making the raincheck only allowed me to get 1 raincheck for the price of $79.99. I asked him about wheter or not the rebates would still apply, and he told me to copy the raincheck and send it in with the rebates. That way, they processing center would still honor the late submission. I told him I wasn't comfortable with it since it still had a chance of being rejected, but he said that I could bring in the rejection card/letter and the store would take care of it. This ought to be interesting.

Sucks to gamble like that. Especially since you cant return the drive as Im sure that process will tkae a month+ and in that time you will ahve opened and used the drive.

Once I didnt get one in hands on Sunday I passed.

I went to OM this morning--the drives were all out of stock. The kind of surly dude did however inform me that they get their shipements on Friday, so if I went first thing on saturday morning I should be able to get in. Just a heads up for you guys.

oh that's weak... paying tax on an item that is only $20 as if it was $80

I hear ya! 9.25% makes some rebate deals crappy....although I'm still quite happy with a $28 hard drive.😀

The people in the store new nothing about the drive. They didn't even have a box to check out. No one knew any specs. I was curious as to the ATA ... 100 or 133. They said I'd have to special order it or order it online. I went home to order it online only to find that it was an "In Store Only Item." I called two stores to order it only to be told that I had to call an 877 number to order it. I did so and was told to expect delivery in 15-days.

I thought this was in store only and not online? How are some of you getting this online when it's not even at their website? Link?

ParatoOptimal, WD only makes ATA100 drives, no ATA133 (as far as IDE goes).

There is a chance that OM will not be able to supply the raincheck. They will end up substituting a 120gb for $19.99 AR in next months rebate book.

They are averaging about 50 rainchecks per store and have pulled the 80gb & 120gb from the online store.

Unless they work out a deal with WD they won't be able to provide the rainchecks. In CA, retail store does not have to give rainchecks, neither do they have to honor them once given.

Got mine today. They are not Special Edition as advertised. The Special Edition has a 3 year waranty where as the regular has a 1 year warranty. Still one heck of a deal IMHO.
They are the SE drives. WD changed their policy as well even on the SE drives. They are all now only 1 year warranties.

Not true. I've still got the box my 120gb SE came in and it lists it as having a 3-year warranty. Earlier last year they began boosting the cache size to 8mb for the regular 7200rpm drives. SE maintains the extended warranty. Note that OM uses the same sku, ie. it doesn't differentiate between the drives. I had a mgr "find" me the SE after they had brought out a non-SE drive. YMMV at your store

Did my return and rebuy today. They also let me use a $15 staples coupon, no questions asked. Total is $8.56 AR.

Nice. I tried it, but no dice. Even tried it with 2 different clerks.

Still, can't complain. $19.99, and I didn't have to pay sales tax!

I called two stores to order it only to be told that I had to call an 877 number to order it. I did so and was told to expect delivery in 15-days.

...but one of the rebates needs to be postmarked within 14 days of purchase. In the past I have had to cancel OfficeMax orders that weren't going to be delivered before the post by date. You might want to check with OfficeMax and/or the rebate company to see if they will accept a late form.

They told me they would take the order date as the purchase date up to 14 days after the ship date.

Just wanted to update on the noise issue. This new 80gb is much quieter than my old one, nice drive. RMA here I come!

The first store I went to (Lakewood, CA) told me that they were being discontinued and couldn't be reordered on their system. The second one (Long Beach, CA) told me that they had instructions to issue rainchecks, and they had issued about 60 of them already. I asked about rebates, and they said I would still have to send in the forms, but if it was denied for being late, I should bring in the card saying it was being denied, and they would call up the rebate center from the store and tell them to issue the rebate.

I PM'd to CC, Dunwoody, GA. They used creative math this instance. I had to purchase a $30 GC, but they sold the drive for $49.99. So:

$ 49.99 Drive
$ 30.00 GC
--------------
$ 79.99 Total (Which matches OM Price after instant rebate)

less

$ 40.00 CC Rebate
$ 30.00 GC
--------------
$ 9.99 Net for Drive (assuming I'll use the GC on some future deal)

I only stood there 15 minutes while the clerk asked management and they came back with this... I didn't argue.
I should add that I made sure to get one of the older boxed drives with 3 year warranty. Very nice deal.

Just a word of warning when you go to send in your rebate to OfficeMax. On the RebatesHQ site, if you're filling out the paperwork online it says "Receipt must include a date that corresponds within the promotional period. "No reproduction of capacity label accepted". So apparently they're looking to get the Capacity Label from the package even though the rebate receipt says only a copy of the UPC is necessary. It might be prudent to send both just so they can't say you sent the wrong proof.

Anyone have any luck at PM'ing the drive at Best Buy? Their shelf price is $99.99. I was able to get $50 knocked off it, but the manager wouldn't take off the other $30 saying that "we don't pricematch on manufacturer's rebates". I am going to go there again today w/ a copy of both rebates to see if they will give me the $30 back because it's an exclusive Western Digital/Office Max Rebate (i.e. you can't just buy the drive anywhere and qualify for the rebate).

Does BB still have the 110% pricematch policy?

I figured I didn't do too bad at $50 for an 80 gig drive, though.

The supposed "rain check" offered by the West Palm Beach OM seems to be slipping away. My contact there claimed he would contact me with info on the rain check; he never did. No one at the store is available to inform folks on the list for a "rain check" about the status.

Not looking too promising, is it?

I went to the Roseville CA store for the 80GB WD, MS Mouse, MS keyboard, and the HP DVD+Rs. Of course they were out of everything, and refused to give a raincheck. I asked why the sale signs were still up if they were out and would not issue rainchecks. The moronic answer was that they have to have the signs up because "it's in the ad". I mentioned that the ad said nothing about being limited to stock on hand, limited quantities, or so many items per store and all I got from the salesperson was the classic blank stare.

I finally got the assistant manager to say that they had more "stuff" coming in later in the week but he did not know what. This was all on Sunday, the day the ad came out. It is now Thursday, I have stopped by Office Max every day and they finally told me that I am "out of luck".

I have been dealing with this Office Max since the day they opened the store but no more. They just lost an old and steady customer. Between Office Depot, Staples, Comp USA, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Frye's (all within a very short distance), I am sure I can find a store that will take my money.

That's sorry to hear. Some stores seem to do so bad with customer service that it's horrible. I'm glad my local OM has really helpful people who go the extra mile to help me with little stuff (they're willing to check for the 8MB vs. SE designations for example). I still remember when they had the $10 off $10 coupon, we would go around the 3 OM's within 30 min from us, using the coupons. The other 2 stores often refused to take them, and we ended up using like 5 10 off 10's at our local OM. They were all copies of the coupon too!

You hit the nail right on the head, CUSTOMER SERVICE! I am will to drive a little further and pay a little more if I know I can rely on and trust the people I am dealing with.

I encourage anyone who wants to help Akers to call OD and let them know that customer service needs to rise at that store.

I doubt OfficeDepot can do very much about improving the customer service at OfficeMax stores. 😉
