WD 80gb Hard Drive 19.99 @ Office Max - after mail in rbt

I went to OM yesterday and they were already sold out. I got a raincheck for it and was told by the store manager that if they don't receive more within a week, they will give it to me for the after rebates price of $19.99 plus tax. $20.00 out the door would be sweet. Then, I wouldn't have to keep my fingers crossed expecting the rebates to come.

The ass't mgr in West Palm Beach claimed the same: if his store didn't receive enough stock to satisfy the waiting list (at least a dozen names long) by week's end then the corporate office would send stock later at the "final" price ($19.95 + tax on original price) and the folks on the waiting list wouldn't have to deal with rebates at all.

Did my return and rebuy today. They also let me use a $15 staples coupon, no questions asked. Total is $8.56 AR.

Killer deal then!

My location (The Woodlands) was out, as well as all the others around me. I got the manager to write a raincheck and he wrote in that if it came in after the deadline that they would take the rebates off at the register 🙂

mmm.... no rebates.... man, I hope they do the same thing when the 250GB drive goes on sale!

grr.... I wish it wasn't unethical to get 2 - 250GB drives and send the rebates to 2 different addys...

Ionizer86:

WPB must have just got some in because they were out at 1 PM yesterday. I'll check PBG on the way down though.

Here is the manufacturer's online rebate submission: Western Digital
I don't think OM has updated their listing (the pcash rebate) on the maxmyrebates website. I'm guessing it'll be up in the next couple of days.

PDF's of rebates:
1) OM $30 rebate must be postmarked within 14 days of purchase. Copy of UPC goes with this one.
2) WD $30 rebate must be postmarked within 30 days of purchase. Original UPC goes with this one since it is the manufacturer's rebate.

The Western Digital rebate form in the link you provided is out of date. For offer "D" (80 GIG HD) it says the dates are from 1/11/04 to 1/17/04......

This has already been addressed and corrected earlier in the thread.

Odd, yesterday when I checked, WD wanted me to have a 3 yr warranty, but I checked again today, and it's 1 year again...? Should have print screened the Jan 2007 screen yesterday!

The guy at my OM said that WD model was discontinued and that a restock was unlikely. They sold all the replacement drives so I got a raincheck for 2 of them. Hey, the girl writing it up asked me how many so I said 2.

Funny, but I haven't seen a thread discussing the $10 CD burner. I started one, but ... or did I start one?

I saved the ad I bought it with for this same purpose (box is 1 yr warranty vs. ad sez 3 yrs). if the drive fails btwn 1 and 3 years, the ad could support the warranty claim. Hopefully it won't fail at all; but I seem to have bad luck w/ hard drives for whatever reason.

I got 4 7200 RPMs (maxtor & WD) and this WD 80GB (74.53GB really) drive, is the hottest drive I have EVER had. Even hotter than the WD120GB model.
What is up with that?

They should have included a fan on this puppy!

I got 2 today, the last two in the store. I had to book it down to the 2nd nearest OM and it took an hour each way.

They say $20 but I don't understand how that's possible. I paid $86 ($80+tax) and if I get $60 back in rebates, that's $26, not $20+tax. So do I lose the ~$4?

Yes, lower HD temperatures are better.

High temps supposedly cause premature HD failure.

Typ. max operating temp is 55 C.
40 C is pretty warm
30 C is "cool"
IMHO

HDD - Hard Drive Health and MBM - Mother Board Monitor can be helpful, if applicable to your system/drives.
Various hardware doen't even have temp. sensors and / or just not compatible. YMMV

Yes. 🙂

Actually, there's no $4 to lose. I don't think anyone said that the price was $20 plus tax on $20. Final cost after rebates is $20 (not even going to consider cost of stamps, envelopes, time. etc.) plus tax on the amount you paid. For someone in another state that could be $2 or $0.

No advertised prices include tax, and most forum members take it that quoted AR prices do NOT include your state's taxes.

🙂 hope this helps.

I've had a WD 80gb for about 6 months now, I think it's louder (idle noise) that either my WD 60gb or WD 120gb and also hotter. I was going to compare that one to this new one and see if there's a difference. If so, I'll RMA the "old" one, it's only about 6 months old. On the other hand, it has a 3 year warranty, manufactured in August '03 so I'm hoping the new one I have, mfgd. Jan '04, is better.

I went yesterday to my local OM. They were out of stock so I asked for a raincheck. The employee that was making the raincheck only allowed me to get 1 raincheck for the price of $79.99. I asked him about wheter or not the rebates would still apply, and he told me to copy the raincheck and send it in with the rebates. That way, they processing center would still honor the late submission. I told him I wasn't comfortable with it since it still had a chance of being rejected, but he said that I could bring in the rejection card/letter and the store would take care of it. This ought to be interesting.

Went to my Local OM (Walpole, MA) today and got the Assist Mngr to write a raincheck for the drive. On the raincheck it says "REG PR $99.99 AD PR $19.99" When I asked him about the rebates he stated that they will take care of the rebates "in store" when the next shipment arrives. When I asked him how sure he was about other shipments he said that he heard there are still plenty left in WDs distribution pipeline.

Personally, I believe this is an OM marketing scheme to initially buy a limited quantity of drives and then judge subsequent purchases of stock based upon the number of rainchecks written.

For those waiting on (backordered) internet orders, I just called but could get no firm information on when it would be back in stock. CSR said maybe 7-14 business days.

Guess I'll have to return it if it shows up beyond next Friday as I'm not chancing submitting the rebate late (backordered or not).
