It's been a while since i've taken my thermo classes, but the evaporation of the water off the sock actually provides additional cooling

I have cooled many a water bottle in very hot conditions by putting it in a wet sock and keeping it wet for a few hours. Works remarkably well.

Well, that would be preferred to the alternative, which is to fully submerge it in a flowing body of water.

meh just put it in the river, wetting a sock for hours to achieve a few degrees less than 15°C or whatever it is is probably worthless, in the summer it's warm enough outside to make 10-15°C taste cool.

Same. Though the not freezing period in my part of the world is slightly longer.

This! We went on a ski trip to Breck two years ago - b/t 10 of us we bought some 50 bottles of beer/wine. Just left it on the deck in the snow vs hogging fridge space. After about 4 days a few bottles busted from freezing

I remember seeing a pic or reading a story somewhere on the internet: back then before the invention of double and triple glass, they just built 2 windows one before the other, leaving a space in the middle corresponding to the wall's thickness. That's the perfect spot. That way it doesn't freeze too much but it stays cold.

Maybe those methods will be important to know in the zombie apocalypse, but until then......I'm so glad I live in America. We have refrigeration and ice readily available.

When those fail, we have money to buy cold beer.

As pointed out, the beer that has been in the sock and subjected to evaporative cooling will be colder than the ambient water. I usually just drank the beer warm, or brought wine in a space bag myself, but evaporative cooling does work in low humidity or high wind as pointed out.
