People's first "real" build were in the 1Ghz range? Jesus I'm old.

I remember getting a Cyrix 133Mhz and thinking it was an incredible jump from my 66mhz.
Then later I got a Pentium Pro 200Mhz and was cock of the walk
Celeron 350A OC'ed to 400 in a Abit PH6
Then DUAL 350As @400 in a Abit BP6
Then I have no idea where I went from there. Maybe an OC'ed AMD TBird?

Dual 350s on BP6 damn that was a great combo. Too bad that board had such shirty capacitor issues.

I just bumped the FSB on my 366 Cellies up to 100 and ran them at 550MHz. Capacitors are easy to fix.

OK, that was Arctic Silver. Think I still have some AS5!

I believe KryoTech may be the brand I was looking for....

That's right! I still have a box of some old parts from back then. I still think I have some AS5 as well. I used to spend ridiculous amounts of money on FrozenCPU back then. Since I really don't 'game' as much anymore.... I don't find myself needing a top-of-the-line PC anymore. My next build will be a HTPC if anything.

I got a couple of those combos just for the processor because it was cheaper than buying the processor by itself. Didn't the guy from Frys who ran those combo deals go to jail or something?

And I blew tons of cash on FrozenCPU on flashy coolers, memory heatsinks, UV lights, glowing cables etc etc.

How the heck did you even remember that about the memory?? it had an SIS735 chipset...

K7S5A.jpg

Because I remember at least two people who fried them by upgrading to DDR without changing the necessary jumpers or something (lots of smoke). :)

I recommended that board to my friend for his 1.4GHz Tbird when Anandtech first reviewed it because it was finally an alternative to all the crap Via chipsets for AMD users at the time. It had Via-like compatibility problems of its own, but it definitely had a niche.

First computer was a 4.77 mhz 8086. Dual floppies, no hard drive, 1 color monitor, $3,000.
Then I dropped $7,000 on a 16mhz 80286 with a 10mb hd and a 16 color monitor.

You fools and your BP6's, I ran a supermicro p6dbu. Oh yeah, on board ultra2 scsi... that was a bitch to keep set up when I went to LAN parties. There was overclocking available, up to 112 FSB but I had to keep it at 103 FSB.

I also found out that my second purchased cpu was an unlocked PII-400 as I never set my multiplier on the board and one CPU ran at 400 while the other was running at 450. Caused all sorts of problems until I set the multiplier to 4x.

Brand new, unused Frye's combo, I only paid $79 + tax. Come on Spacejamz, it's got a Athlon 2100, you know you want it, LOL. The AMD's at that time was the Duron, Athlon, and the holy Grail, an "unlocked Barton". The later I was able to overclock to around 2600ghz on this board, (I bought several of these), The trick was to cool the southbridge, they got hot!

I really wish I had been into computers starting in the early 90s (I was born in '87). I feel like I missed out on the bandwagon and the crazy ride computer hardware was on up into the early 2000s.

Now it's all about mobile processing when it comes to big regular leaps in capability but even that is getting close to it's limits.
