Link Hallelujah (literally)!

---------
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican is giving two thumbs up to the Harry Potter series.

The good vs. evil plot lines of the best-selling books are imbued with Christian morals, the Rev. Don Peter Fleetwood told a Vatican news conference Monday.

"I don't see any, any problems in the Harry Potter series," Fleetwood said.

He was responding to questions following the release of a new Vatican document on the New Age phenomenon, which he helped draft as a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture.

Fleetwood was asked whether the magic embraced by Harry Potter and his pals at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was problematic for the Roman Catholic Church. Some evangelical groups have condemned the series for glamorizing magic and the occult.

"I don't think there's anyone in this room who grew up without fairies, magic and angels in their imaginary world," said Fleetwood, who is British. "They aren't bad. They aren't serving as a banner for an anti-Christian ideology.

"If I have understood well the intentions of Harry Potter's author, they help children to see the difference between good and evil," said Fleetwood. "And she is very clear on this."

He said British author J.K. Rowling (news - web sites) was "Christian by conviction, is Christian in her mode of living, even in her way of writing."

Rowling's four Harry Potter titles have sold an estimated 192 million copies worldwide, and the books have been published in at least 55 languages. The first two books have been adapted into hit movies and a fifth book in the series is due in bookstores June 21.

The books chronicle the fictional adventures of young Harry and his wizard pals at Hogwarts as they battle Harry's nemesis, the evil sorcerer Voldemort.
--------

I despise all of those conservative Christian wackos who condemn Harry Potter. It gives the rest of us conservative Christians a bad name. It's a frickin' kids book, fer cryin' out loud!

Sounds like the Vatican is being reasonable. Maybe this will calm down some of those people who assume that children cannot figure out what is reality and what is fiction. It's a freakin story. By the time a kid can read it, they can tell the difference.

All good and well that the Vatican "approves" of Harry Potter, but that it's even up for discussion is kind of pathetic IMO. I mean, it's just a BOOK fer crying out loud.

The problem with the Harry Potter books is not that some child might think that the Hogwarts School of Magic is real, it's that the books present something which is evil in a positive light.

What "evil" do they portray in a positive light exactly?

One of the great things that we take for granted is the ability to form our own opinions & beliefs.

If someone believes a particular series of books is incongruous with their faith, there is no debate - They are entitled to their opinion, as are you.

I personally don't give two sh!ts either way, but the backlash against those who DO believe it wrong is unwarranted.

Magic/Sorcery. Most children who read Harry Potter think that it would be neat to be able to perform magic. Sorcery is condemned in Scripture, without exception. Anyone who bases their beliefs on Scripture (i.e. the evangelicals who condemn the Harry Potter series) would have a problem with the books. The Catholic church does not base it's beliefs/doctrines on Scripture (hence the Protestant Reformation), and therefore could come out in favor of Harry Potter based on it's good vs. evil plot lines

I like how they said christian about 90 times in their little up writeup. But they don't fool me! Being a devout christian of super powers, I know that Harry Potter is really the devil trying to get everyone to sin! I refuse to watch this paganfest and, for even thinking about it, I have punished myself with 1000000000 lashings and 1209054 hail marys. OH LORD FORGIVETH THY SINS OF MY NEIGHBOR, HE KNOWETH NOT WHATETH HE WATCHETH.

I totally agree with what they said. These other Christian groups are just off base......this is fantasy, not the promotion of "real" witchery.

Hey, it'd be neat to wield a lightsaber too, but you don't see anybody lashing out at Star Wars. Thematically, there's no difference between the two movies -- they're both good vs. evil fantasy movies, and THAT'S IT! :| If you can show me a real life example of kids posessed by witchcraft and using magic wands to perform REAL witchcraft, then I'll be concerned. I haven't seen it happen, and I doubt it ever has or ever will.

Welding a lightsaber is not condemned by Scripture, sorcery is. I don't know what you mean by "posessed by witchcraft". For kids and witchcraft, see Wicca.

If an adult reading Harry Potter implies they are a paedophile, then there are millions of guilty parties.
Anyway, it's about freaking time. My 10-year-old cousin was a HUGE fan of Harry Potter until the maverick morons at his church declared that he was evil. Now the kid gets all shady whenever people talk about it. Ridiculous.

I mean, it's just a BOOK fer crying out loud.
Fausto1: Was this statement intentionally ironic? If so, it's a mark of genious.

Yes, I suggest that you prepare yourself for the eternal torment. Perhaps by forcing yourself to watch every Hulk Hogan movie, in chronological order, at LEAST once a week. By the time your burning in eternal torment, there wouldnt be anything worse they could do!

The backlash is against "Christians" who can't distinguish between imaginary demons, such as witchcraft, and real ones, such as illiteracy.
