Hi,

I have two R9 290X. They can run up to 90C. I know that they are design to run this hot but it's making my case really hot and causing my CPU to raise about 10C. I have a NZXT x60 connected to the CPU. Would it make sense to get water coolers for my video cards too? Would it make a big difference in temperature? Thanks.

I bought two R9 290x because I got a discount when buying two and I have a Dell U3011 30" 2560x1600 monitor. Maybe in the next year or so I want to get a 4k monitor but I'm waiting for the 4K IPS monitors to come down in price (if ever). Thanks!

you will lower the temperature by 30-40C

dn7309, thanks for the info. Would you recommend any GPU all in one water coolers? I can either use 120mm or 140mm radiators.

Have you tried upping the fan speed on the card a bit to get more hot air out of the case? That may help with case temps assuming these cards are reference cards.

I have the corsair H50, the cheapest AIO available with a Karken G10 and run it with a low noise adapter.

On a cool day I get around 55-60 C while on a hot day (like today, my room temp is 85 F) I maxed out at 68 C.

I'm not sure why people go for H55 or anything else more expensive.

I have 4 x R9 290x Under water in the same loop with the proper amount of radiators.

My temps never go above 48'C on the first card (which is the hottest) on the core.

My cards usually are at
CORE: 40-48'C
VRM1: 37'C
VRM2: 34'C

I can clock them up to 1200/1550mhz without breaking the 55'C ish during heavy load for long period.

I don't have the reference video cards. I have the Gigabyte Windforce cards with three fans. Will those water coolers still work?

The G10 is mounted throughthe four mounting holes around the GPU so I think it would fit since most aftermarket cards share the same 4 holes pattern.

dn7309, thanks that's good to know. Just to double check the H50 can be mounted to a 120 fan slot.

the h50 can be mounted into most 120mm fan cut out assuming you don't have clearance issue with the motherboard, hard drive cage or CPU cooler.

the H50 is a very slim AIO radiator

Ok great. Thanks. I promise I won't ask any more questions :)

Don't be afraid to ask questions because i'm not afraid to answer them. :colbert:

Also, what kind of money are you ready to invest for the watercooling parts? Because for 400$ you could have some nice custom water cooled GPUs with pump and radiator. It will be much better than the AIO coolers...also much better VRM cooling with Full Cover blocks.

Definitely agree with KaRLitos

I think I'll get an all in one water cooler like the h50 and the nzxt adapter. I don't have the skill set to manually build my own. I would rather not play around with liquid and electricity.

I might get the h75. It's 10 dollar more and looks like it comes with better fans. Thanks.

David, I'm telling, you have more chances of screwing with an AIO cooler.

Those coolers are not meant to go on a GPU. On the other end, the blocks do and they are engineered for that. Also, watercooling is hell of a fun.

Oh that looks cool. Where do you buy the supplies? Is it easy to remove the fan from the gpu?

Yes it is very easy. Where do you live?

VIDEO OF THE INSTALLATION an EK WATERBLOCK ON R9 290x
(The guy put way too much paste in this vid by the way.)

JOB AID MANUAL (PDF) Installation Guide from EK

Thermal Interfance material aka TIM aka thermal paste
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_grease
Thermal grease (also called thermal gel, thermal compound, thermal paste, heat paste, heat sink paste, thermal interface material, or heat sink compound) is a viscous fluid substance, originally with properties akin to grease, which increases the thermal conductivity of a thermal interface by filling microscopic air-gaps present due to the imperfectly flat and smooth surfaces of the components; the compound has far greater thermal conductivity than air (but far less than metal). In electronics, it is often used to aid a component's thermal dissipation via a heat sink.

(Good amount of paste)

I live in the northern Virginia area about 15 miles west of dc. Do you have to get the thermal paste warm before you remove it?

No, you use isotropic alcohol to remove it and a cloth, I prefer lint-free cloth.

There are two big stores in USA for watercooling stuff.

Good vid that shows how to remove and apply thermal paste on a die (CPU or GPU)

I was thinking about going for a full loop but after reading about maintenance to prevent corrosion and tube shrinking due to heat that may cause to leaking water, I decide to go AIO.

Wow. I have 5 years of heavy watercooling and all this never happenned to me.

The tubing shrinking is hilarious and I never heard of that. Its not like the water is 70'c. Lolll

just dont cheapen out parts and you'll be fine.

Karlitos here by the way inspire me. Well I dont have water cooling loop yet but already started buying stuff.

sounds scary but I read alot that its kinda fun

just to tease you. here is so far parts I have. more on the way

I have the Cosair Vengeance C70

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-c70-mid-tower-gaming-case-gunmetal-black

My R9 290X video cards are the Gigabyte Windforce series. I was reading a few articles about how difficult they are to remove the fans and heat sink. Also you have to replace something on the VRM (spelling?) . I'm not sure what. Do you think it's too much trouble putting a water cooler on it? My initial plan was to get the nxet g10 and a corsair water cooler. Thanks.
